Chapter 7 - Blood in the Water

The subterranean visiting suite of the Metropolitan Detention Center smelled of industrial bleach, damp concrete, and despair.
Eleanor arrived thirty minutes late, her hair disheveled despite her attempts to look respectable, her eyes rimmed with swollen red rings. Chloe had refused to come, reportedly hiding in their motel room to avoid the paparazzi camping outside. Eleanor clutched her imitation leather handbag against her stomach like a shield as she stepped into the sterile glass booth where I was already seated.
Across from us, separated by bulletproof glass and heavy wire mesh, sat Richard Sterling.
Stripped of his three-thousand-dollar tailored suits and gold cufflinks, Richard looked twenty years older. The orange prison jumpsuit was baggy on his frame, his silver hair uncombed, his hands shackled to the metal ring bolted into the steel table. When he saw me sitting beside his wife, a flash of pure terror shot across his face.
"Eleanor," Richard croaked through the intercom telephone mounted on the wall. "What are you doing here with her? I told you not to speak to her! Vance is taking care of everything! Did you sign the conservatorship papers?"
Eleanor picked up her receiver, her voice trembling. "Richard... she said you had another bank account. She said—"
"Hang up the phone, Eleanor!" Richard barked, slamming his cuffed hands against the steel table. The sound echoed violently in the booth. "She's lying to you! She's trying to tear this family apart! Don't listen to a word that ungrateful serpent says!"
I picked up my own receiver and pressed the intercom button. My voice was smooth, tranquil, and lethal.
"Hello, Father," I said. "You look remarkably healthy for a man facing twenty-five years for financial treason."
"You ruined this family, Maya!" Richard spat, his eyes bulging as he pressed his face against the glass. "You took everything I built! I gave you life! I gave you our name!"
"You gave me debt, lies, and a forged signature," I replied calmly.
I turned to Eleanor and slid a thick manila folder across the counter in front of her.
"Open it, Mother."
Eleanor hesitated, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the receiver onto the shelf before picking it up again. With trembling fingers, she flipped open the cover.
Inside were high-resolution photographs, airline manifests, real estate deeds, and bank transaction summaries dated over the last seven years.
In the photographs, Richard Sterling was smiling warmly on a luxury yacht in the Caribbean, his arm wrapped around a glamorous woman thirty years his junior. In another photograph, Richard was holding a toddler with golden curls at a villa in Marbella, Spain. The real estate deed showed the villa was purchased outright for 3.8 million dollars in cash—drawn directly from the joint corporate account Eleanor believed was funding Chloe's fashion dreams and family investments.
"What... what is this?" Eleanor whispered, the color draining completely from her skin until she looked like a ghost. "Who is this woman? Who is that child?"
"Her name is Elena Rostova," I stated evenly, my words dropping like lead weights into the silence of the room. "She was Father’s former executive assistant. The boy is Leo Sterling. He is four years old. Richard legally registered him as his sole heir in Spain three years ago."
Richard went entirely rigid on the other side of the glass. He stopped yelling. His mouth hung slightly open, the sweat glistening on his forehead.
"No..." Eleanor whimpered, shaking her head in violent denial. "No, Richard... tell me she made this up. Tell me this is fake! You said we were broke! You said we had to take Maya's clinic revenue because the market crashed!"
Richard looked away, refusing to meet his wife's pleading eyes.
"Richard!" Eleanor screamed into the telephone receiver, pounding her fist against the thick partition. "Answer me! I stood by you for thirty-two years! I stood in that hospital lobby today and humiliated myself in front of millions of people to get money for your bail! I was going to sign Vance’s papers to ruin Maya for you! Tell me you didn't steal our money for a whore and a bastard!"
Richard slowly turned his head back. The mask of the loving, patriarch husband had completely dissolved. In its place was the cold, narcissistic core of a man who cared for nothing on earth but his own survival.
"You stupid, pathetic woman," Richard hissed through the receiver, his voice devoid of any warmth. "You think you were ever a partner to me? You were a decorative piece of furniture that spent too much money and asked too many stupid questions! Maya was the only one in that house with real brains, and she hated my guts. Vance promised to get me out of the country to Spain once the conservatorship went through. Did you really think I was taking you and Chloe with me?"
Eleanor dropped the telephone receiver. It dangled on its armored steel cord, spinning slowly, emitting a faint, hollow hum.
She slumped against the counter, clutching her chest, gasping for air as though someone had physically driven a dagger into her heart. Her entire world, the grand delusion of her perfect, aristocratic family for which she had sacrificed and abused her eldest daughter, had shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
I stood up, adjusting the lapels of my coat.
"Silas Vance is waiting for you at his estate in forty-five minutes, Eleanor," I said softly, looking down at my broken mother. "Go sign his papers. Put me under conservatorship. Help Richard escape to Spain to raise his new son with the millions he stole from us."
Eleanor looked up at me, tears streaming down her pale, withered face. For the first time in my life, she did not look at me with condescension or entitlement. She looked at me with raw, terrified reverence.
"Maya..." she sobbed, reaching out toward my coat, then pulling her hand back in shame. "Please... what do I do? What do we do?"
May you like
"You have one chance to save yourself from prison, Eleanor," I said. "And it doesn't involve Silas Vance."
