Chapter 6 - The Live-Stream Reversal

Within forty-five minutes of the lobby incident, the video had exploded across every major social platform. But it had not gone viral in the way Chloe had meticulously planned.
Instead of a wave of public outrage demanding the cancellation of Dr. Maya Sterling, internet sleuths and investigative journalists tore through the details with surgical precision. Chloe’s comment section had turned into a slaughterhouse.
*“Did she really try to shame her surgeon sister while wearing a Cartier bracelet?”*
*“The mom literally has fresh Botox while crying she can’t afford medication!”*
*“Look at the tax filings Dr. Sterling showed! Chloe spent $70k in Paris on her sister's dime!”*
Arthur was waiting in the back of our town car, his iPad glowing with social media analytics. A grim smile touched his lips as he handed me a bottle of mineral water.
"Chloe had to turn off comments on all her platforms fifteen minutes ago," Arthur reported. "Her agency dropped her contract before she even made it back to their motel. Her sponsorships have been terminated with immediate effect."
"She brought a camera to an operating room," I remarked, leaning back against the leather seat and watching the rain splatter against the tinted glass. "She thought life was an Instagram narrative where tears always equal righteousness. She forgot that in the real world, the ledgers always balance."
"It gets worse for them," Arthur added, pulling up a secure transmission from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. "Your father's attorney tried to file for an emergency bail reduction this afternoon, using Chloe's video to claim the family was destitute and facing public harassment. The magistrate judge denied bail entirely. In fact, Judge Miller remanded him into maximum security custody at the metropolitan detention center after reviewing Vance's offshore connections."
"And Silas Vance?" I asked, my voice sharpening. "How is he reacting to his financial leverage slipping through his fingers?"
Arthur’s smile faded, replaced by professional gravity. "Vance is desperate. His creditors are demanding full liquidity by Friday morning, or his primary real estate portfolio goes to auction. He knows you hold the debt bonds that can crush him. So he’s changing tactics. He contacted Eleanor two hours ago."
I turned my head toward Arthur. "He contacted my mother?"
"He offered to put Eleanor and Chloe up in a luxury penthouse at the Grand Sovereign Hotel, along with paying five hundred thousand dollars into an escrow account—on one condition."
"He wants Eleanor to file an emergency petition under state probate and conservatorship laws," I surmised instantly, feeling a cold knot of disgust tighten in my stomach. "He wants her to claim that due to extreme psychological stress and erratic behavior, I am mentally unfit to manage my medical empire, placing my assets under family conservatorship."
"Precisely," Arthur nodded. "It’s the old corporate raider playbook. If he can tie your personal and business accounts up in probate court with a conservatorship hearing, your bond recall against him is automatically stayed for up to ninety days. In ninety days, Vance can liquidate his offshore assets, leave your family to take the fall for the fraud, and walk away clean."
"And Eleanor agreed?"
"She’s signing the petition at Vance’s private residence in three hours."
I looked out the window as the car glided through the rain-soaked streets. A bitter laugh escaped my lips. Even after Richard was behind bars, even after Chloe’s public humiliation, Eleanor’s instinct was still to sell me out to the highest bidder if it meant a bed in a penthouse suite.
"Arthur," I said softly, the tone of my voice causing the seasoned attorney to sit up straighter. "Does my mother know about Richard's second safe-deposit box at the Union Trust Bank in Zurich?"
Arthur blinked, surprised. "The one we uncovered during the forensic audit last week? No. We haven't entered that into evidence yet."
"Good," I said, a dangerous gleam in my eyes. "Call Eleanor’s private burner phone. Tell her I have one final piece of information for her before she signs Vance’s papers. Tell her that if she wants to know who Richard was really spending my money on for the past six years, she should meet me in the private viewing room of the metropolitan lockup in one hour."
"You’re going to show her the Zurich accounts?"
May you like
"I'm going to show her the truth," I replied. "Eleanor always believed Richard was her devoted husband and I was the ungrateful daughter. It’s time she learned the exact price of her blind loyalty."
