Chapter 9 - The Phoenix Protocol

Six months later.
The glittering metropolis of Geneva, Switzerland, was bathed in the crisp light of early spring.
The annual International Intellectual Property and Innovation Gala was taking place at the Palais des Nations. The event was the single most prestigious gathering of true technological power on earth—not the loud, venture-backed promoters of Silicon Valley, but the sovereign funds, legacy research trusts, and industrial dynasties that truly held the infrastructure of the modern world.
Inside the grand ballroom, hundreds of dignitaries in black tie and formal dress mingled beneath crystal chandeliers.
"Have you seen the numbers on Lumina Core?" an Austrian industrialist murmured to his companion. "Since Lady Alyssa Sterling took full control and spun off the legacy Prescott assets, their valuation has cleared sixty billion. They just signed the unified European energy grid contract."
"And what became of Prescott?" the other asked with a dry chuckle.
"Working as a mid-level technical consultant for a third-tier firm in Austin, from what I hear. Bankrupt, stripped of his board seats, living in a rented townhouse. His mother is suing him for elder neglect, and the secretary who set him up is doing three years in federal prison for securities fraud."
"Poetic justice," the Austrian remarked, raising his glass. "He forgot that in this world, there are those who wear the crowns, and those who own the gold that minted them."
At that moment, the grand doors at the top of the marble staircase swung open.
The room fell into an appreciative, respectful hush.
I stepped onto the landing.
I wore a column gown of deep emerald silk, simple yet devastatingly elegant. Around my neck was the ancestral Sterling diamond collar, restored to its rightful place after being recovered by our legal team from Evelyn's pawn broker. My head was held high, my gaze direct and luminous.
Beside me, stepping down the stairs with easy grace, was Julian Croft—Marcus Vance’s godson, the managing partner of Croft Sovereign Capital, and a brilliant innovator who had built his own empire without stealing a single line of code from anyone.
Julian leaned down slightly, his dark eyes sparkling with quiet amusement as the entire room turned toward us.
"They're staring, Alyssa," he murmured, his voice rich and steady.
"Let them stare, Julian," I replied, a slow, radiant smile touching my lips. "For seven years, I made myself invisible so someone else could feel tall. I don't intend to hide ever again."
"Nor should you," Julian said softly, extending his arm with effortless gentlemanly grace. "The world is finally seeing the master, not the shadow."
I took his arm, feeling the warmth and solid strength of a man who didn't fear my brilliance, who didn't see my heritage as an obstacle to his pride, but as an equal force to be respected.

We descended into the ballroom, met with the respectful bows and raised glasses of the global elite.
