Chapter 9 - The Forgotten Safe

Later that afternoon, the foothill rain began to fall in soft, rhythmic sheets, drumming against the tin roof of the Lawson farmhouse. Rebecca walked through the quiet rooms, accompanied only by the ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer. The house was empty of Darren’s presence, but the emotional scars lingered in every corner.

In Toby’s room, the small bed remained neatly made, the stuffed blue bear sitting against the pillows. Rebecca knelt by the bed, pressing her face into the soft fabric, smelling the faint, comforting scent of baby shampoo and lavender. She wept not out of despair, but out of an overwhelming surge of fierce, maternal protection.

"I won't let them erase you, Toby," she whispered into the pillow. "I promise you. Mama is fighting for you."

A knock at the front door broke the silence. Rebecca wiped her tears, walked downstairs, and opened the door to find Sheriff Miller standing on the porch, holding an oversized manila envelope and a heavy steel key ring.

"Rebecca," Sheriff Miller said, his rugged face etched with sympathy and determination. "We executed a secondary search warrant on Darren’s private office in town and the storage unit he rented out by the rail yard. We found something you need to see."

Rebecca led the sheriff into the living room, clearing a space on the rustic oak coffee table. Sheriff Miller pulled out a set of brass keys and a stack of financial folders.

"Darren had a hidden wall safe behind the drywall in that storage unit," Miller explained. "It took the locksmith two hours to crack it. Inside were these: three life insurance policies."

Rebecca frowned, taking the folders. "We only had one policy through my father’s old credit union. A fifty-thousand-dollar term policy to cover medical debts."

"Look at the dates, Rebecca," Sheriff Miller said quietly.

Rebecca opened the top folder. The policy was issued by an overseas underwriter registered in Gibraltar. The insured name was *Toby Lawson*. The beneficiary was *Darren Thomas Lawson, Sole Trustee*.

The coverage amount: *One Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars.*

The application date: *November 3rd—just two months before Toby got sick.*

Rebecca felt the room tilt. Her breath hitched in her throat as she opened the second and third folders. Two more supplemental policies from two different offshore syndicates, totaling another one point two million dollars.

"He insured a four-year-old child for nearly three million dollars," Rebecca whispered, her hands shaking so violently the paper rattled. "Through foreign entities that don't report to standard American credit bureaus."

"And that’s not all," Sheriff Miller added, his voice grim. "We found a prescription bottle in the safe. Not in Toby’s name. In Darren’s name. A high-potency pediatric bronchial sedative. Prescribed by a private clinic in Tijuana, Mexico, during a weekend trip Darren took last October."
