Chapter 11 - The Confession in County Lockup

The next morning, the storm had cleared into an ominous, heavy overcast. Rebecca didn't wait for the court proceedings. She drove down to the county jail accompanied by Arthur Ward, demanding a face-to-face proffer with Elena Vance under the presence of Detective Alvarez.
Elena sat across the consultation table, her eyes red-rimmed, trembling with nerves. When Rebecca placed the copies of the three offshore life insurance policies on the table, Elena gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.
"You knew about these," Rebecca said, leaning over the table, her voice quiet, steady, and razor-sharp. "Don't lie to me, Elena. Darren didn't have the brains to set up Gibraltar offshore trusts without a corporate paralegal. You drafted the corporate filings."
Elena began to cry hysterically, shaking her head. "I... I swear on my life, Rebecca! Darren told me they were tax sheltering accounts for the land sale! He said they were standard trust indemnity bonds required by Blackwood Crest! I didn't know they were life insurance policies on Toby! I swear I didn't!"
"Then explain this," Arthur said, sliding a printed email between Elena’s personal account and Richard Sterling’s private server. "Dated January twelfth—two days before Toby died. The subject line reads: *Final Liquidation of Minor Beneficiary Obstacle.*"
Elena’s face turned gray. She slumped back in her metal chair, her hands clutching her jumpsuit. "Oh God... oh God..."
"Sterling knew," Rebecca pressed, stepping into Elena’s space. "Sterling helped Darren acquire the Mexican sedative, didn't he? Sterling put Darren in touch with that unlicensed clinic in Tijuana!"
Elena looked up, her eyes wide with terror. "Sterling has a private fixer. A former private military contractor named Vance Miller—no relation to the sheriff. He operates out of Reno. He handles 'problematic titles' for Blackwood's acquisitions across California and Nevada. Darren met him at the Peppermill Casino last November. Darren was deep in sports betting debt, Rebecca! He owed three hundred grand to people who break legs. Sterling bought his debt, then gave him a way out: the Lawson timberland. When Darren said the land was locked in trust for your son, Sterling told him: *'Every obstacle has an expiration date.'*"
Arthur stood up, his jaw clenched so tight the tendons stood out on his neck. "Detective Alvarez, did you record that?"

Alvarez nodded from the corner, his hand on the digital recorder. "Every word. It’s enough for a federal RICO warrant against Sterling and Blackwood Crest."
"Be careful, Rebecca," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror. "Sterling knows the net is closing. He won't let you testify at the grand jury tomorrow. He won't let those property deeds stay in your name."
