Chapter 5 - The Queen’s New Empire

Back in Greenwich, the massive estate was quieter, but it hummed with a renewed, vibrant energy.
Evelyn stood on the wide second-floor balcony, holding a cup of freshly brewed artisan green tea. The morning sun washed over the meticulously manicured lawns, the sparkling pool, and the distant, tranquil pond.
Behind her, sliding glass doors opened softly, and Nora stepped out carrying a fresh tablet.
“Mrs. Carter? You have a call from the CEO of Lumina Global. They’re inquiring about the European tech partnership you initiated last week,” Nora reported, a subtle hint of pride in her voice.
Evelyn took a sip of her tea, smiling faintly. “Tell them I’ll take the meeting on Thursday, but only if their lead designer flies out here to Greenwich. I don’t travel for initial pitch meetings anymore.”
“Consider it done,” Nora chuckled. Then her expression softened. “You know… you look incredible. Lighter.”
“Freedom looks good on everyone, Nora,” Evelyn replied, turning to face her long-time housekeeper. “How are things downstairs?”
“Everything is running smoothly. The new security team has locked down the perimeter, and your legal counsel confirmed that Ryan’s former associates have all backed away. No one is coming near this estate.”
Evelyn nodded slowly. She wasn’t vindictive by nature; she had simply spent seven years suffocating in a life where her generosity was weaponized against her. Now, the air was clean. The people who valued her only for her wallet or her silence were gone, replaced by a world she commanded entirely on her own terms.
Later that afternoon, Evelyn’s private phone—a secure line known only to a select few high-level executives—buzzed on her mahogany desk.
She picked it up. “Evelyn speaking.”
“Ev? It’s David.”
Evelyn’s face softened. David Carter was her older brother, a powerful venture capitalist based in London who had spent years warning her about Ryan’s ambitions.
“Hello, David. I saw the headlines made it across the Atlantic,” Evelyn said lightly.
“Headlines? Ev, the financial press over here is calling it ‘The Greatest Corporate Reclaim of the Decade’!” David laughed warmly over the line. “Mom and Dad would be so proud of you. You let the wolf wear sheep's clothing until he forgot how to hunt, and then you pulled the rug out.”
“I just got tired of playing a supporting role in my own life, David,” Evelyn admitted softly.
“So, what’s next for the reigning queen of Greenwich?” David asked. “Are you staying in New York, or are you coming back to London for a victory tour?”
Evelyn looked out the large arched window of her office, watching the autumn leaves drift across the pristine lawn.
“No, David. I’m staying right here,” Evelyn said, a confident smile playing on her lips. “This is my home. It always has been. And now, I’m finally ready to build something even bigger.”
“Just promise me one thing, Ev,” David said, his tone turning slightly serious.
“What’s that?”
“If any other broke Silicon Valley guys try to charm you with cheap suits and borrowed dreams, let me vet them first.”
Evelyn laughed, a rich, genuine sound that echoed through the empty, sunlit room.

“Don’t worry, big brother,” Evelyn replied smoothly. “My doors are locked, and the key is safely in my hands.”
