Chapter 3 - Monday Morning Reality Check

At exactly 7:58 AM on Monday, the heavy iron security gates of the Greenwich estate swung open with a loud, mechanical groan.
Ryan, who hadn't slept a wink, rushed out to the front porch wearing a wrinkled shirt and sweatpants, his hair unbrushed. He had spent the entire night calling lawyers, board members, and banks, only to be met with terrifying news: every single bank account associated with Carter Home Technologies had been locked pending a federal audit ordered by Aethelgard Holdings.
Behind him, Margaret and Sophie emerged from the mansion, both looking bewildered and annoyed.
“Ryan, what is going on?” Margaret demanded, clutching her designer handbag. “There are three massive moving trucks blocking the driveway! And why is the water turned off in the guest wing?”
“Ryan, honey, tell me this is a joke,” Sophie whined, waddling behind Margaret. “I have a prenatal massage at ten, and I can’t leave if these trucks are blocking the road!”
Before Ryan could answer, the door of the lead moving truck opened, and a tall, sharp-looking man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out. He wore wire-rimmed glasses and carried a thick leather briefcase.
Behind him stepped Evelyn.
She looked breathtaking. She wore a tailored white Dior pantsuit, oversized sunglasses that caught the morning sunlight, and heels that clicked with absolute authority against the cobblestone driveway. Gone was the quiet woman in the black linen dress who ironed clothes in the laundry room. This was Evelyn Carter: billionaire heiress, corporate titan, and rightful owner of everything in sight.
Ryan stumbled down the front steps, his face pale, his hands outstretched in a desperate plea.
“Ev… Ev, please. Let’s talk about this,” Ryan stammered, his voice cracking. “What is this nonsense? Moving trucks? Lawyers? You can’t just… kick us out!”
Evelyn stopped a few feet away. Slowly, deliberately, she lowered her sunglasses, fixing him with a cold, piercing gaze that made Ryan freeze in his tracks.
“Us?” Evelyn asked, her voice calm and chillingly polite. “Ryan, there is no ‘us.’ There hasn’t been an ‘us’ for a long time. You just forgot who was paying the bills.”
“Evelyn, are you out of your mind?!” Margaret shrieked, marching down the steps, her finger pointed directly at Evelyn’s face. “How dare you speak to my son like that! You ungrateful, barren—”
“Mrs. Carter,” Evelyn interrupted, her voice cutting through Margaret’s tirade like a scalpel. She didn’t even flinch. She turned her gaze to the lawyer beside her. “Mr. Vance, please remind Mrs. Carter Senior who owns the legal title to this property.”
Mr. Vance—the very same CFO Ryan had spoken to on the phone—adjusted his glasses and stepped forward. He opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a heavily stamped document, and cleared his throat.
“By order of the Connecticut Superior Court and the primary holding entity, Aethelgard Holdings, this real estate property, along with all structural assets, furnishings, and corporate accounts affiliated with Carter Home Technologies, is legally registered solely to Mrs. Evelyn Carter-Aethelgard,” Vance announced clearly for the entire driveway to hear.
Margaret’s jaw dropped. The finger pointing at Evelyn slowly lowered. “That… that’s impossible. Ryan built this company! Ryan bought this house!”
“Ryan built nothing without my capital,” Evelyn stated flatly. She turned back to her former husband, whose eyes were wide with sheer terror.
“Ev… please,” Ryan whispered, taking a step toward her. “We can fix this. We can talk. We have a history! What about our marriage?”
“Our marriage?” Evelyn let out a short, humorless laugh. “Ryan, you moved your pregnant mistress into my house, had your mother treat me like a servant, and spent seven years taking credit for my life’s work. You didn’t want a wife, Ryan. You wanted a maid with a checkbook.”
Sophie stepped forward, her face flushed with anger and panic. “You bitch! You can’t kick out a pregnant woman! This is inhumane! I’ll sue you! I’ll go to the press!”
Evelyn turned her cool gaze to Sophie. A faint, mocking smile touched her lips.
“Go ahead, Sophie. Tell the press how you moved into a house owned by the woman whose husband you were sleeping with,” Evelyn replied smoothly. “Let’s see how fast the media destroys your pristine reputation.”
Sophie paled, stepping back and biting her lip.
Evelyn turned to the moving crew chief, who was standing by with a clipboard.
“You have two hours to clear out all personal belongings belonging to these three individuals,” Evelyn instructed clearly. “Anything left behind after 10:00 AM goes straight to the municipal dump.”
“You got it, Mrs. Carter,” the crew chief nodded.
Evelyn turned around, her heels clicking against the stone as she walked toward the front entrance of the mansion, leaving Ryan, Margaret, and Sophie standing in stunned, helpless silence on the driveway.
