Chapter 9 - Inside the Lion’s Den

For a long, agonizing moment, Lily stiffened in Marissa’s embrace like a statue of cold iron. Her arms remained pinned to her sides, her fists clenched tight. But as Marissa buried her face in her daughter’s cropped hair, breathing in the faint, familiar scent of vanilla and rain that no amount of conditioning could ever truly wash away, the rigid tension in Lily’s small body slowly began to dissolve.

Slowly, awkwardly, as if her limbs were being operated by unfamiliar machinery, Lily raised her small arms and wrapped them around Marissa’s neck. Her face pressed into her mother’s tactical vest, and a ragged, muffled sob escaped her lips.

“They... they said you were gone,” Lily whispered, her voice small, fragile, and utterly childlike for the first time in seven years. “They said nobody was coming back for me.”

“I’m here,” Marissa whispered fiercely, pressing a kiss to the top of Lily’s head. “I’m right here, and no one is ever taking you away from me again.”

Up on the balcony, Victor Sterling’s expression darkened instantly. The amusement vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, calculating fury. He slammed his crystal glass down onto the stone railing, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards.

“Guards!” Sterling screamed into his comms link. “Tear them apart! I want the mother dead and the asset secured in Sub-level Three immediately!”

Heavy armored boots echoed across the stone terrace as a dozen fresh security operatives rushed out of the mansion doors, assault rifles raised.

Marissa didn't hesitate. Scooping Lily up into her arms in a secure, tactical carry, she spun around, shielded her daughter’s body with her own, and fired a rapid burst from her MP5 into the courtyard security lights. The floodlights shattered in a shower of electrical sparks, plunging the courtyard into sudden, chaotic darkness.

Taking advantage of the blinding gloom, Marissa sprinted toward the shattered glass doors of the mansion’s grand foyer, kicking them wide open and diving inside just as a hail of bullets chewed up the doorframe behind them.

The interior of the Blackwood Estate was a masterpiece of opulent terror—high vaulted ceilings adorned with crystal chandeliers, gleaming marble floors, and dark wood-paneled walls lined with priceless art that masked a high-security corporate panopticon. Red emergency backup lights bathed the corridors in an eerie, pulsing glow.

“Hold on tight, Lily,” Marissa panted, checking her weapon’s ammunition counter. They were outmatched, outnumbered, and trapped deep inside enemy territory with an entire private army hunting them down.

“There’s a central server room downstairs,” Lily whispered softly against Marissa’s shoulder, her voice regaining a sliver of its sharp, analytical edge. “If we reach the master terminal, I can override the perimeter blast doors and unlock the escape tunnels leading to the airstrip on the other side of the valley.”

Marissa looked down at her daughter in astonishment. The conditioning was deep, but the brilliant mind beneath it was entirely intact.

“Lead the way, Captain,” Marissa said grimly, raising her weapon as the sound of approaching boots echoed from the hallway ahead.
