Chapter 11 - Ghost in the Machine

The drop from the ventilation shaft into the server room was silent, Marissa hitting the polished concrete floor in a rolling crouch, her weapon instantly scanning the dark corners of the vast, echoing chamber. When she confirmed the room was empty, she motioned for Lily to drop down.
Lily landed lightly beside her, immediately sprinting toward the glass-enclosed master terminal. Without a second's hesitation, she pulled a small, silver thumb drive from the lining of her uniform collar—right beside the green dinosaur pin—and slammed it into the terminal’s main diagnostic port.
Instantly, the massive wraparound monitors lining the console flickered to life, flooding the dark room with a blinding wave of harsh white light. Lines of complex code, diagnostic trees, and global surveillance feeds cascaded down the screens at terrifying speed.
*WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED,* a synthetic voice droned monotonously from the console speakers. *INITIATING SYSTEM LOCKDOWN IN THREE MINUTES.*
“Hurry, Lily,” Marissa urged, keeping watch at the heavy steel entrance door of the server room. She could hear distant alarms wailing through the facility’s upper levels—the security detail had realized they were doubling back.
“I’m bypassing their firewall,” Lily’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with astonishing speed, a blur of motion that defied her eleven years of age. “Project Artemis main database... downloading encryption keys... routing data packets to international law enforcement agencies... and...”
She slammed her palm down onto the large physical enter key.
Across the entire Blackwood Estate, a synchronized series of heavy metallic thuds echoed through the walls. The reinforced security blast doors guarding the perimeter tunnels slid wide open, bathing the snowy exterior courtyard in a welcoming beam of yellow light.
Simultaneously, a high-pitched alarm shrieked from the console, accompanied by a flashing red banner across every monitor: *DATA EXFILTRATION COMPLETE. FEDERAL AUTHORITIES NOTIFIED.*
“We did it,” Lily breathed, turning away from the terminal with a rare, brilliant smile that instantly transformed her face, making her look like a normal little girl for the first time in seven years.
Before Marissa could even smile back, the heavy steel door of the server room exploded inward in a shower of white-hot sparks and splintered metal.
Victor Sterling stood in the smoking doorway, flanked by two towering mercenaries holding assault rifles at the ready. Sterling’s tailored suit was dusted with soot, his silver hair slightly disheveled, but his eyes burned with an icy, murderous rage.

“End of the line, Sergeant,” Sterling sneered, raising a heavy-caliber pistol and leveling it directly at Marissa’s chest. “You should have stayed in your grave.”
