Chapter 16 - THE PUPPET MASTER UNMASKED

Back inside the hearing chamber, the atmosphere had deteriorated into total procedural warfare.
"Commander Grant, you are skating on the precipice of contempt of Congress!" Senator Sterling roared, slamming his wooden gavel down with enough force to crack the soundboard. "You will answer the direct question: Did you or did you not authorize military personnel under your command to violate the Posse Comitatus Act by interfering with a lawful county sheriff's patrol?"
The gallery held its breath.
I looked directly at the man behind the dais. His expensive Italian suit and silver hair projected the veneer of an elder statesman, but underneath lay the rot of an empire that had spent twenty years bleeding the naval procurement system dry. He wasn't defending the law; he was defending the dynasty that paid for his reelection campaigns.
"Senator," I replied, leaning into the microphone, "the six unlawful traffic stops executed against my private vehicle on State Route 7 were not routine county patrols. They were targeted reconnaissance runs orchestrated by a rogue tactical cell operating out of the Annandale Sheriff's Department."
"That is an unsubstantiated accusation!" Sterling sneered.
"It is an evidentiary fact," I countered, pulling a thin, carbon-fiber drive from my dress jacket and laying it squarely on the mahogany table. "Every cruiser that intercepted me carried unregistered license-plate readers linked directly to a private cloud server maintained by Sterling Aerospace. The orders did not originate from the sheriff's dispatcher. They originated from IP addresses registered to this very office suite—Russell Building, Room 412."
A collective murmur erupted among the press corps. Cameras whipped from my face to Senator Sterling, whose knuckles had turned bone-white against his gavel.
"That is an outright lie!" Sterling sputtered, rising out of his leather chair. "You are impugning the integrity of a United States Senator without foundation!"
"Room 412 is your personal annex, Senator," I said, my voice echoing cold and unrelenting. "The digital certificates that authorized the county deputies to pull weapons on a naval officer were signed using a cryptographic congressional key allocated specifically to your senior chief of staff, Marcus Albright."
Senator Holloway turned her head sharply toward Sterling, her face etched with profound disgust. "Is this true, Robert? Did your office grant secure backdoor access to municipal law enforcement to hunt an active-duty commander?"
Before Sterling could stammer a denial, my personal phone vibrated against my ribcage. Three short pulses, followed by one long.
It was Kane’s tactical distress signal: *Target located. Hostile engagement imminent.*
I picked up the carbon-fiber drive and stood up from the witness table.
"Commander Grant, you are not excused!" Sterling bellowed, his voice cracking with desperate rage. "U.S. Marshals, detain this officer!"
Two federal marshals standing near the side exit looked at each other, then looked at me, then looked at the television cameras broadcasting Sterling's panic to forty million American homes. Neither man moved an inch.

"You may hold me in contempt at your leisure, Mr. Chairman," I declared, snapping a sharp, textbook salute toward the flag behind the dais. "Right now, my commanding officer's life is on the line, and unlike your office, the United States Navy does not abandon its own."
I spun on my heels and marched out of the hearing room through the center aisle, leaving the committee in absolute pandemonium.
