Chapter 9 - The Siege of Warehouse 4

Warehouse 4 stood on the edge of the abandoned industrial docks, rain lashing against its rusted corrugated metal walls. Inside, the air smelled of salt water, diesel fuel, and damp rot.
Sadi was tied to a heavy wooden chair beneath a single swinging incandescent bulb. Her lip was split, her green dress torn, but her eyes blazed with undiminished hatred as she glared at Lorenzo Vane.
Lorenzo stood five feet away, checking his gold watch, flanked by six heavily armed mercenaries.
“He won't come, you know,” Lorenzo sneered, pacing the concrete. “Desmond is a coward. He’s probably hiding under his blankets right now, letting his empire slip through his fingers.”
“He will come,” Sadi spat, blood coloring her teeth. “And he’s going to rip your throat out.”
Before Lorenzo could strike her, the heavy roll-up steel doors of the warehouse shuddered.
A massive impact caved the metal inward.
The sound of an industrial engine roared outside. A modified armored transport plowed straight through the steel door, sending twisted metal and debris flying across the concrete floor.
Gunfire immediately erupted.
Lorenzo’s men scrambled for cover behind shipping crates, spraying automatic fire at the transport.
The rear doors of the armored truck kicked open.
Smoke grenades detonated, filling the vast warehouse with a dense, blinding fog of white smoke. Through the mist came the methodical, terrifying sound of gunfire.
*Pop. Pop. Pop.*
Targeted. Lethal. Three of Lorenzo’s men dropped to the floor with precision headshots before they could even identify a target.
Lorenzo panicked, grabbing Sadi by her hair, pulling her up as a human shield, pressing the barrel of a chrome revolver against her temple.
“Hold your fire!” Lorenzo screamed into the smoke. “I’ll blow her brains out, Desmond! Show yourself!”
The smoke parted slowly.
From the haze emerged a figure that made Lorenzo’s breath hitch in pure terror.
Desmond Gallagher was standing.
He wasn't running, but he was upright. Strapped around his legs and waist was a cutting-edge military-grade powered exoskeleton—a motorized hydraulic brace system he had hidden away for months, refusing to use due to pride and physical agony.
The hydraulic servos hissed with quiet power as he took a heavy, mechanical step forward.
His face was painted in shadows, his massive shoulders encased in black tactical body armor, an assault rifle resting effortlessly in his broad hands.
He looked like a war god carved from steel and vengeance.
“Let her go, Lorenzo,” Desmond rumbled, each mechanical step echoing through the warehouse like a death knell.
“You’re a freak!” Lorenzo shrieked, his hand trembling as he pressed the gun harder into Sadi’s temple. “Drop the rifle or she dies!”
“Desmond, don't!” Sadi yelled.
Desmond did not drop the rifle. He kept his icy blue eyes locked onto Lorenzo’s terrified face.
“You took my legs, Lorenzo,” Desmond said calmly, taking another heavy step. *Hiss-clank.* “You thought you took my power. But you forgot one thing.”
“What? What did I forget?” Lorenzo screamed, his voice cracking.
“I was a monster long before I stopped walking.”
In that split second, Sadi reacted.
Trusting Desmond with her life, she threw her entire weight backward, headbutting Lorenzo squarely in the bridge of his nose.
The crunch of cartilage was audible. Lorenzo howled in agony, his shot discharging harmlessly into the corrugated ceiling.
In the microsecond Lorenzo was exposed, Desmond fired.
A single round took Lorenzo through the shoulder, spinning him violently away from Sadi.
Desmond’s rifle dropped to the sling. He closed the remaining distance with heavy, powered strides, drawing a combat knife from his chest rig.
Lorenzo scrambled backward across the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder, weeping in terror. “Desmond! Please! We were brothers! We built this—”
Desmond stepped onto Lorenzo’s uninjured arm, the hydraulic weight of the brace pinning the man to the floor with crushing force. Bone cracked beneath the boot.
Lorenzo screamed.
Desmond leaned down, his face inches from his treacherous lieutenant.
“You touched what belongs to me,” Desmond whispered softly.
The blade flashed once.
Lorenzo fell silent forever.
Desmond stood in the quiet warehouse, his chest heaving, the servos of the exoskeleton whining under the strain of his deadened limbs.
He turned toward Sadi.
She was still tied to the chair, weeping, looking at him not with horror at the violence, but with profound, overwhelmed love.
Desmond reached her, dropping his knife, his hands trembling as he cut the ropes binding her wrists.
The moment the ropes fell away, Sadi threw herself into his arms.
The hydraulic brace groaned under the sudden impact, but Desmond’s powerful arms locked around her, lifting her off her feet, pressing her tightly against his armored chest.
“I’ve got you,” he choked out, his face burying in her hair, his own tears finally breaking through his iron mask. “I’ve got you, my brave girl. You’re safe.”
“You stood,” she sobbed against his neck, feeling the cold steel of the brace beneath his trousers. “Desmond, you stood for me.”
May you like
“I would walk through hell on broken glass for you,” he vowed fiercely, kissing her lips with a desperate, bloodstained passion that erased every terror of the night.
