Chapter 8 - The Kidnapping

The peace lasted less than twelve hours.
The mole they had captured had not acted alone. Before Frankie could extract the full layout of Lorenzo’s final counter-attack, a coordinated strike hit the estate’s outer perimeter.
It happened at noon.
A delivery van loaded with explosives breached the southern gatehouse, detonating with enough force to rattle the windows of the main mansion.
Desmond was in the secure communications room with Frankie, coordinating the tactical response, when Lorenzo’s elite strike team—infiltrating through an old drainage tunnel beneath the greenhouse—breached the residential wing.
Sadi was in the conservatory, gathering Desmond’s afternoon medications, when the glass shattered inward.
Flashbang grenades blinded her with deafening white light.
She fought. She threw a heavy ceramic planter at the first man, scratched the face of the second, but a heavy gloved hand clamped a chloroform rag over her nose and mouth.
Within seconds, the world dissolved into blackness.
When Desmond reached the conservatory, dragging himself through the devastation, all that remained was a broken glass vial of nerve medication and a pool of Sadi’s blood on the white stone tiles.
Pinned to the wooden bench was a handwritten note:
*The docks. Warehouse 4. Come alone in your chair, Gallagher. Sign over the syndicate assets, or she leaves in pieces.*
Frankie rushed in behind him, gun drawn, breathing heavily. “Boss! We’ve got forty men ready to roll. We can surround the harbor—”
“No,” Desmond said.
He looked down at the blood on the tile.
Something inside Desmond Gallagher snapped—the final chain of self-pity, physical limitation, and doubt that had bound him since the car bomb.
His eyes went dead. A cold, terrifying calm settled over his features.
“He wants me alone,” Desmond said, his voice dropping into a register so dark Frankie felt a chill race down his spine. “He thinks I am helpless. He thinks my chair is my coffin.”
Desmond looked up at his lieutenant.

“Bring the tactical brace from the medical bay,” Desmond ordered. “And load the heavy armory. Today, Lorenzo learns why they call me the Butcher.”
