Chapter 3 - The Eviction

The digital clock on the dashboard of Ethan’s rented BMW read 11:42 PM as he pulled up beneath the grand portico of the St. Regis Chicago, where his multi-million-dollar penthouse occupied the top two floors.

Beside him, Vanessa Grant was sobbing hysterically, smearing expensive mascara across her cheeks.

"This is a nightmare," Vanessa wailed, clutching her head. "My corporate card is declined! My apartment lease was tied to the company housing fund! Ethan, what are we going to do? Where are we going to sleep?"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Ethan roared, slamming his hands against the steering wheel. The polished veneer of his charm was completely shattered, exposing the snarling, desperate coward beneath. "Just shut your mouth! You're the one who convinced me to siphon funds from the riverfront escrow! You're the one who pushed me to spend recklessly!"

"I pushed you?" Vanessa shrieked, turning on him with bared teeth. "You were happy to take the money! You wanted to live like a king! You told me Claire was just a boring accessory you were going to toss aside once the project cleared!"

Ethan shoved her away, opening his car door. "Get out."

"What?"

"I said, get out! We have two hours to grab what we can before the Hales lock us out permanently. Move!"

They practically sprinted through the opulent lobby, ignoring the curious, whispered glances of the night concierge who had already received an encrypted memo from Hale Properties revoking Ethan’s resident status.

When they burst onto the seventy-fifth floor, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse were wide open.

Standing inside the sprawling, floor-to-ceiling glass living room were four burly private security guards dressed in black tactical gear, casually boxing up Ethan’s designer suits, expensive watches, and rare art pieces.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Ethan screamed, rushing toward them. "This is private property! Get out of my home right now, or I'll have you arrested!"

The lead security guard—a massive man with a scar across his jaw named Miller—didn't even blink. He slowly turned around, holding a cardboard box filled with Ethan’s gold-plated fountain pens.

"Mr. Cole," Miller said, his voice flat and devoid of respect. "By order of Hale Properties and the federal receiver, this property has been seized due to fraudulent asset acquisition. You have exactly twenty-two minutes left to gather your personal toiletries and exit the premises."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, running toward her walk-in closet. "My designer handbags are in there! My furs! Those are mine!"

"Anything purchased with corporate accounts linked to Cole Urban Development is federal evidence," Miller replied coldly, stepping in front of the hallway. "Touch one item that isn't on your personal pre-approved exemption list, and I will personally toss you down the elevator shaft."

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, realizing the terrifying reality of her situation. She had no money, no job, no apartment, and no legal leg to stand on.

Ethan felt a cold sweat break out across his back. He walked over to his mahogany executive desk, frantically punching the code into his private wall safe. The heavy steel door popped open.

Inside sat three velvet jeweler's boxes and a stack of bearer bonds worth nearly five hundred thousand dollars.

Ethan smiled triumphantly, reaching inside. "Ha! You missed these—"

*Click.*

Before Ethan’s fingers could graze the velvet boxes, a heavy combat boot slammed against the safe door, snapping it shut with a deafening crash.

Ethan yelped, stumbling backward.

Standing in the doorway of the study was Leo Hale.

The youngest Hale brother had his hands shoved casually into the pockets of his overcoat, a lazy, mocking smirk playing on his lips.

"Nice try, Ethan," Leo chuckled, walking slowly into the room. "Did you really think we wouldn't sweep your private safe? Those bonds were purchased with embezzled investor funds from the municipal transit grant. Federal property."

Ethan glared at Leo with sheer, unadulterated hatred. "You ruined my life! Your family destroyed everything I built!"

Leo stopped walking, his mocking smirk vanishing instantly, replaced by a gaze so cold it made Ethan take another step back.

"You built nothing, Ethan," Leo said, his voice dangerously soft. "You were a broke nobody with a rusted Jeep six years ago. My sister gave you her money, her connections, and her belief when no one else would. She kept us off your back so you could play at being a self-made man. And how did you repay her? You cheated on her, you humiliated her, and tonight, you raised your hand against her."

Leo stepped right up to Ethan, towering over him by two inches.

"My family didn't destroy you, Ethan," Leo whispered. "You handed us the match, poured gasoline all over yourself, and lit the match. We just made sure you couldn't put it out."

Leo turned to the security guards. "Pack up their toothbrushes, throw them in the hallway, and throw the trash out."

Ten minutes later, Ethan Cole and Vanessa Grant stood shivering on the cold Chicago sidewalk outside the St. Regis, surrounded by two cardboard boxes containing a few changes of casual clothes, cheap toiletries, and their dignity completely annihilated.

The glass doors clicked shut behind them.

The smart locks engaged with a heavy, final *thud*.

As the wind howled off Lake Michigan, biting through Ethan’s thin designer shirt, he realized the terrifying truth: he was completely, utterly alone.
