Chapter 2 - The Freezing of an Empire

The chaos inside the Ashbury Hotel ballroom escalated from stunned silence into a riot of whispers, flashing smartphone cameras, and frantic phone calls. Investors who had spent the evening kissing Ethan Cole’s ring were now desperately trying to distance themselves from him, scrambling toward the exits like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Ethan stood paralyzed beneath the towering screens, which continued to loop the devastating footage of his infidelity and financial corruption. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.

"This is a conspiracy!" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking with rising hysteria as he pointed a trembling finger at the Hale brothers. "They're trying a hostile takeover! They're manipulating the market! Don't listen to them!"

No one was listening.

Marcus Hale didn't even deign to look at Ethan’s pathetic outburst. Instead, Marcus pulled out his phone, tapping the screen to authorize the next phase of the corporate execution.

"Server wipe initiated," Marcus muttered into the receiver. "Freeze the payroll accounts. Notify the SEC and the board of directors that Cole Urban Development is entering immediate receivership due to structural insolvency and executive malfeasance."

Vanessa Grant grabbed Ethan’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging into his sleeve so hard they tore the fabric. "Ethan! Do something! Call your lawyers! If they freeze the accounts, our offshore transfers will be flagged! We'll lose everything!"

"Get off me!" Ethan snarled, shoving her away in a sudden burst of panicked self-preservation. He had spent years viewing Vanessa as his glamorous prize, but now, seeing her as the catalyst for his ruin, he looked at her with pure venom. "This is all your fault! You pushed me to go faster, to spend more!"

Vanessa stared at him, her mouth agape. "My fault? You were the one who couldn't keep your pants zipped—"

"Enough," Julian’s voice cut through their pathetic bickering like a guillotine.

Julian turned his attention back to Claire. His expression softened instantly, transforming from a ruthless prosecutor into a fiercely protective older brother. He draped his heavy wool overcoat over Claire’s shoulders, wrapping her against the chill of the ruined evening.

"Let's go home, Claire," Julian murmured gently. "You don't need to spend another second in this room."

Claire looked up at her brother, then cast one final, lingering glance at Ethan.

Ethan looked small. Stripped of his tailored armor, his stolen wealth, and his fragile ego, he looked like the desperate, broke nobody she had met six years ago in a dusty Evanston coffee shop—except this time, there was no redemption waiting for him. No loyalty left to exploit.

"Wait," Claire said quietly. She stepped out from beneath Julian’s coat for just a second, walking toward Ethan.

Ethan flinched, instinctively cowering back. "Claire... look, I'm sorry. I lost my temper. It was the stress, the project... Claire, we can fix this. We're husband and wife—"

*Slap.*

The sound was sharp, crisp, and echoed off the crystal chandeliers.

Claire’s hand stung, but her face was completely expressionless. She hadn't hit him with the blind rage he had used on her; she had hit him with cold, calculated finality.

"That," Claire said, her voice steady and ringing clear across the silent ballroom, "is for the last eleven months of lies."

She turned on her heel, walking back to her brothers without looking back.

"Let's go," she said.

As the Hale brothers escorted Claire toward the private exit, Leo tossed a thick manila envelope onto the floor right at Ethan’s feet.

"Consider that your eviction notice," Leo smiled coldly. "The penthouse has already been repossessed by Hale Properties. You have two hours to get your things out before the locks are changed. Don't bother packing the expensive watches—they were purchased with embezzled capital, so technically, they belong to us now."

The heavy oak doors closed behind them, sealing Ethan and Vanessa in a room filled with ghosts, shattered glass, and total ruin.

Within twenty minutes, the private black SUVs were speeding away from the Ashbury Hotel, cutting through the glittering, rain-slicked streets of downtown Chicago.

Inside the middle vehicle, the atmosphere was a mix of protective fury and quiet tension. Marcus was tapping furiously on his laptop, lines of green code and financial ledgers reflecting in his glasses. Leo was reviewing security feeds on his tablet.

Julian sat beside Claire in the back seat, holding her hand tightly. He had noticed the way she occasionally pressed her palm against her lower stomach, a protective, instinctive gesture.

"Are you feeling alright, Claire?" Julian asked softly, breaking the silence. "Do we need to stop at Northwestern Memorial? We can have the best obstetrics team in the state ready—"

Claire shook her head, offering a faint, tired smile. "I'm fine, Julian. Just... tired. And hungry."

Marcus looked up from his screen, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I had Leo call ahead. Chef Antonio at our private townhouse is making your favorite truffle risotto and lamb chops. And no sugar-free nonsense; Antonio knows you're eating for two now."

Claire blinked, surprised. "You... you knew?"

Marcus chuckled. "Claire, you've been eating pickles dipped in peanut butter for three weeks straight, and Leo intercepted your prescription refill for prenatal vitamins two weeks ago. Did you really think you could hide a pregnancy from three older brothers who track your medical records for fun?"

Claire sighed, shaking her head. "I wanted to tell Ethan tonight. Before all of this blew up. I wanted to give him a chance to choose his family."

"He chose a gold-digger and his own greed," Julian said flatly, his jaw tightening. "And he paid for it. But more importantly, *you* are safe now. The baby is safe. From this moment on, you never have to worry about money, safety, or that pathetic excuse for a human being ever again."

"What happens to him now?" Claire asked, her voice carrying a trace of lingering melancholy.

"Ethan?" Leo chimed in from the front seat, not looking up from his tablet. "Oh, he's completely finished. The SEC is already moving on his embezzlement charges. Vanessa Grant is cooperating with federal prosecutors to save her own skin, handing over every document she has that implicates Ethan in corporate fraud. Within forty-eight hours, he'll be indicted. Within a month, he'll be facing federal prison time."

Leo grinned evilly. "And as for Cole Urban Development? It's being liquidated. By tomorrow morning, the company will be legally dissolved. Ethan Cole will leave this marriage with exactly what he started with six years ago: nothing."

Claire looked out the window at the Chicago skyline, watching the neon lights blur in the rain. She felt a profound sense of grief—not for Ethan, but for the man she had *thought* he was. The man she had loved.

Yet, beneath the grief, there was an overwhelming wave of relief. The weight she had carried for months—the suspicion, the loneliness, the anxiety—was gone.

She placed her hand gently over her stomach.

"Welcome to the world," she whispered softly to her unborn child. "Your uncles are a bit intense, but I promise you, you're going to be just fine."
