Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Julian stepped between us before Ryan could take another stride, his arm extending like an iron bar across the narrow trailer.
"You have five seconds to back out of that door, Sterling," Julian said, his voice deadly low and lethal. "Before I have security throw you down thirty-five flights of stairs."
"I’m not here to fight you, Vance!" Ryan screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. He looked completely unhinged. The manicured, arrogant businessman who had sat on our leather sofa had evaporated, replaced by a ghost of a man on the verge of complete psychological collapse.
Ryan pulled a crumpled sheaf of papers from his coat pocket and thrust them toward me, his hands shaking violently.
"She lied to me, Madeline!" he cried, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "The baby isn't mine! Leo isn't my son!"
I remained silent behind Julian's shoulder. I did not gasp. I did not look surprised.
Ryan noticed my lack of shock, and a look of profound horror dawned on his features. "You... you knew? How could you know?"
"I heard Dr. Harrison in the corridor weeks ago," I said calmly, my voice flat and devoid of sympathy. "He told the technician that an AB father cannot have an O child."
Ryan sank to his knees right there on the dusty floor of the construction trailer, burying his face in his hands. He began to weep—deep, ugly, shuddering sobs that shook his entire torso.
"Dr. Harrison tried to hide it for two weeks because Evelyn threatened to ruin his clinic," Ryan choked out between gasps. "Then I hired a private investigator. Vanessa wasn't just seeing me last winter. She was living with her ex-boyfriend—an out-of-work club promoter named Marcus. When she got pregnant, Marcus told her to find a rich idiot to foot the bill. And I... I was the idiot."
The irony was so thick it tasted like ash.
"Where is Vanessa now?" I asked.
"My mother threw her out of the estate yesterday afternoon," Ryan mumbled, staring blankly at the floorboards. "Vanessa tried to blackmail us. She threatened to go to the press and tell everyone that the great Sterling family couldn't even verify their own bloodline. Evelyn had a hypertensive crisis. She’s in the ICU right now, half-paralyzed from a stroke."
The grand Evelyn Sterling. Brought down by the very vanity that had consumed her life.
"I am sorry for your mother's health," I said quietly. "Stroke is a terrible thing."
Ryan looked up at me, his eyes burning with a desperate, pathetic hope. He crawled forward two inches on his knees, reaching out toward the hem of my coat. Julian’s shoe shifted, firmly blocking his hand.
"Madeline," Ryan pleaded, his voice breaking into pieces. "I ruined everything. I threw away an angel for a viper. But God is giving us a second chance. Look at you!" He pointed a trembling finger at my swollen belly. "You were pregnant that day! Dr. Sterling confirmed it when I broke into his office yesterday! You’re carrying my biological child! Our miracle!"
The air in the trailer turned arctic.
"Your miracle?" I repeated, stepping around Julian so that Ryan could see the full, unyielding fury in my eyes.
"Yes! My child! Our daughter or son—"
"This child is mine," I said, every syllable hitting him like a hammer. "You abandoned her on a cold porch with divorce papers before you even knew her heartbeat. You told me not to embarrass myself. You told me my barren womb was a drain on your family."
"I was blind! I was manipulated by Vanessa and my mother!" Ryan screamed, beating his chest with a clenched fist. "I will give you everything! The house, the Sterling shares, full public apologies in every major paper! We can remarry tomorrow! Madeline, I love you! I have always loved you!"
"You don't love me, Ryan," I said softly, looking at him with a pity so profound it cut deeper than hatred. "You don't even love this baby. You only love what this baby represents: an escape from your humiliating failure. You want my child to save you from the laughter of high society."
"She’s my flesh and blood!" Ryan snarled, a flash of his old, ugly entitlement breaking through his tears. "You can't keep her from me! I have legal rights! Under the law, any child conceived during the marriage is presumed to be the husband's child! I will take you to court, Madeline! I will take full custody!"
Julian didn't wait. He grabbed Ryan by the lapels of his designer jacket, hauled him to his feet with terrifying strength, and shoved him violently against the trailer door.
"Try it, Sterling," Julian whispered into Ryan’s face, his eyes flashing with lethal promise. "File one motion. Speak her name in public one more time. And by tomorrow morning, I will buy out the second mortgage on your development company, call in every outstanding note with the city banks, and leak the paternity fraud evidence to every media outlet in North America. You will be bankrupt, disgraced, and legally obliterated before you ever step foot inside a family courtroom."
Julian opened the door and shoved Ryan out onto the dusty scaffolding landing.
"Get off my site," Julian commanded. "Before I finish what your mother started."
May you like
Ryan stumbled down the wooden steps, weeping, clutching his crumpled lab reports, a broken shell disappearing into the evening fog.
