Chapter 3 - The Society Gala Ambush

Three months flew by like a whirlwind of concrete, steel, and late-night drafting sessions.
By my fifth month of pregnancy, my body had settled into a steady rhythm. The nausea had receded, replaced by a deep, quiet strength. I had rented a sunlit apartment overlooking the river, furnished with minimalist wooden pieces and a sunroom already earmarked for a crib. My bank account, once frozen by Ryan's spite, now held the substantial advance from Vance Holdings.
Yet, in the elite circles of the city, the narrative was entirely different. Evelyn Sterling had spun a masterclass of slander: Madeline had allegedly suffered from chronic depression, abandoned her marital duties, and walked away in shame after Ryan discovered she was permanently barren. Vanessa Cole was being paraded through charity lunches as the miraculous young savior of the Sterling dynasty.
The annual Architectural Heritage Gala at the Metropolitan Museum was the premier event of the season. Julian insisted I attend.
"It’s the official reveal of the Grand Zenith team," Julian told me as we stood in my studio two days before the event. He was inspecting a sample of brushed brass. "The industry needs to see who is leading the vision."
"Ryan and Evelyn will be there," I cautioned him. My bump was now evident, though under an expertly tailored emerald gown with draped silk pleats, it could still pass as high-fashion volume.
Julian gave me an unreadable look. "Let them. A lion doesn't hide because jackals are barking in the courtyard."
On the night of the gala, the museum’s grand marble hall was bathed in amber chandelier light. Champagne flutes clinked against laughter; the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and calculated networking.
I arrived on Julian’s arm. The emerald silk gown cascaded down my frame, my hair swept up into an intricate chignon that accentuated the sharp, elegant lines of my neck. I looked healthy, radiant, and entirely unbothered.
As we crossed the foyer, the ambient chatter dropped several decibels. Heads turned. Whispers rippled across the polished floor like a wave.
"Is that... Madeline?"
"I heard she had a breakdown..."
"Look at her. She’s with Julian Vance!"
Near the center of the hall, near the ice sculpture, stood Ryan Sterling. He looked immaculate in a black tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch. Beside him, dressed in an overly tight, pale pink satin gown, was Vanessa. Her belly was large and prominent—she was nearly seven months along now. Behind them, holding court with several city council members, stood Evelyn, dripping in emeralds that matched my gown.
Ryan turned toward the entrance, his glass freezing midway to his lips. His eyes widened in undisguised shock as he took me in. He took an involuntary step forward, his jaw slacking.
Evelyn noticed his distraction, turned, and her face darkened instantly into an expression of venomous contempt.
"What is she doing here?" Evelyn hissed loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. She pushed through the small crowd, marching directly toward us, her heels clicking aggressively on the marble. Ryan followed, grabbing Vanessa’s elbow to drag her along.
"Madeline," Evelyn spat, blocking our path. "I suppose you found someone desperate enough to buy your ticket. Have you no shame? Lurking around society events after the disgrace you caused?"
"Good evening, Evelyn," I replied, my voice smooth, velvet-soft, and completely unruffled. "You're looking remarkably tense. Have your blood pressure medications stopped working?"
Several socialites behind Evelyn gasped into their champagne flutes.
"Watch your tongue," Ryan stepped forward, glaring at me, then snapping his gaze to Julian Vance. "Vance. I don't know what game you're playing, bringing my ex-wife here as your date, but it’s in exceptionally poor taste."
Julian didn't blink. He kept one hand casually tucked in his tuxedo pocket, towering half a head above Ryan. "Madeline isn't here as my date, Sterling. She is here as the Executive Principal Architect of the Grand Zenith Project."
The silence that followed was deafening.
Ryan looked as if he had been slapped across the face. "What? That’s impossible. My firm submitted the winning bid—"
"Your firm submitted an unimaginative collection of copied Pinterest boards," Julian stated with brutal, effortless precision. "Madeline’s firm presented a masterwork. The city board approved her designs yesterday afternoon. I suggest you read the morning financial press before you embarrass yourself further."
Vanessa piped up, her voice shrill with manufactured indignation. "Ryan, don't let them disrespect you! Madeline is just using this man because she knows she lost you. She’s bitter because our baby is coming, and she has nothing!"
Vanessa placed both hands dramatically over her rounded belly, thrusting it forward as if brandishing a weapon.
"She’s right," Evelyn sneered, recovering her footing. "A commercial contract doesn't make a woman whole. You can draft all the buildings you want, Madeline, but you will always die alone in an empty house. My grandson will carry the Sterling empire. What will you leave behind?"
I looked at Evelyn. Then I looked at Ryan, whose eyes suddenly flicked downward, catching the subtle drape of my emerald gown as the silk shifted under the light.
For a split second, Ryan’s eyes locked onto the undeniable, round curve of my lower abdomen. The color drained from his skin so violently I thought he might collapse onto the marble floor.
"Madeline..." Ryan whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood. "What... what is that?"
Before I could answer, a sudden, sharp gasp cut through the tension.
Vanessa stumbled backward, her hand flying to her stomach, her face contorting not into maternal pride, but into genuine, panicked agony.

"Ryan..." Vanessa whimpered, grabbing his arm so hard her knuckles turned white. "Ryan, something is wrong. The baby... I... oh God, the baby is coming."
