Chapter 6 - The Mother's Betrayal Exposed

The fifteen-minute recess felt like an eternity.
I sat rigidly in my chair, my hands resting calmly on my knees. Across the aisle, the family dynamic had completely imploded. Bianca was hissing at Roman, her voice shrill and desperate, while Roman furiously dialed numbers on his phone, realizing his career was about to catch fire for a client who couldn't even manage basic bookkeeping.
My mother sat frozen in the front row. Her hands trembled as she clutched her designer handbag. She looked across the aisle at me—really looked at me—for the first time in years. She didn't see the spare part anymore. She saw the storm she had invited into her living room.
When the bailiff called the court back to order, Judge Harrison looked grimmer than before.
"The court has reviewed the initial forensic summaries," Judge Harrison announced, resting his hands on the bench. "Given the severity of the financial allegations involving Holland Medical Logistics, I am appointing an independent federal receiver to take immediate control of the company's accounts. Furthermore, the conservatorship petition is hereby denied and dismissed."
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Bianca slumped back in her chair, her jaw slack.
"Wait," Lydia spoke up, stepping forward. "Your honor, we have one final motion before this court concludes."
"Proceed, Ms. Warren."
"In light of the documented conspiracy to commit legal kidnapping, fraud, and malicious abuse of the court system, we are filing a motion to compel testimony from Mrs. Evelyn Holland regarding her active participation in signing fraudulent character affidavits against her daughter."
My mother's head snapped up. Her eyes widened in absolute horror. "Me? No... no, I didn't—Roman told me it was just to help Bianca protect the family business..."
"Mrs. Holland," Judge Harrison said sternly. "You signed a sworn legal affidavit under penalty of perjury stating that your daughter was mentally incapacitated. You will take the witness stand right now under oath."
The walk to the witness stand was the longest walk of my mother's life. The proud, untouchable matriarch of the country club set looked shriveled, small, and pathetic. As she placed her hand on the Bible, her fingers shook violently.
Lydia stepped up to the podium. "Mrs. Holland, did your older daughter, Bianca, promise you a penthouse suite in Malibu and a monthly stipend funded by the trust money once the conservatorship was approved?"
Mother looked across the courtroom, her eyes locking onto Bianca. Bianca was shaking her head frantically, mouthing Shut up! Shut up!
"She... she said we needed to keep the family assets safe," Mother whispered, her voice cracking. "She said Hawthorne was cold, that she didn't care about us... she cried, and I just wanted us to stay together..."
"You lied to a court of law to help your daughter steal from your other daughter," Lydia stated flatly.

"Objection, badgering," Roman whispered half-heartedly, not even bothering to stand up.
"Overruled," Judge Harrison said. He stared down at my mother with profound disappointment. "Mrs. Holland, your actions border on criminal conspiracy. The court will reserve judgment on your perjury charges pending the outcome of the federal embezzlement investigation into Holland Medical Logistics."
