Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Syndicate

Salvatore’s smirk vanished the second the massive black dog cleared the distance between them in three terrifying bounds.
He scrambled to pull a pistol from his shoulder holster, but Goliath hit him like a charging bull, knocking him flat onto the hood of a parked sedan with a deafening crash of buckling metal. The gun flew from Salvatore’s hand, skidding across the wet asphalt into the gutter.
Goliath didn't bite. He planted his massive paws squarely on Salvatore’s chest, leaning his heavy head down until his wet snout was an inch from the enforcer’s terrified face, letting out a low, vibrating growl that made the man’s teeth chatter.
"Get this beast off me!" Salvatore screamed, thrashing wildly.
Adrian walked slowly across the street, his leather shoes splashing in the puddles, his face devoid of any human emotion. The surrounding crowd of onlookers backed away in terror, clearing a wide circle around the burning shop and the dark syndicate enforcer pinned to the car.
Adrian stopped two feet from the hood of the car, looking down at Salvatore like an insect under a microscope.
"You burned the wrong building, Salvatore," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"Moretti... Moretti will kill you for this," Salvatore choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Goliath’s thick fur. "The whole syndicate is coming down on your head—"
"Tell Moretti he doesn't have to come to me," Adrian interrupted, leaning down slightly so his face was inches from the terrified enforcer. "I'm coming to him. Tonight."
Adrian stood back up and snapped his fingers. "Goliath. Off."
The massive Cane Corso backed away immediately, trotting back to stand faithfully beside Adrian’s right leg, his amber eyes still fixed on the trembling enforcer.
Marcus stepped forward, grabbing Salvatore by the collar of his ruined suit and hoisting him to his feet with a single, brutal yank. "You heard the boss. Let's go pay a visit to Pier 4."
Adrian turned back toward Elena, who was still kneeling on the pavement holding the four whimpering puppies against her chest.
He knelt down beside her, ignoring the soot and mud staining his expensive trousers. His large, warm hand reached out, gently touching her cheek, wiping away a streak of black ash.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice softening completely, stripping away all the cold syndicate armor until only the man remained.
"The building is gone, Adrian," Elena whispered, her voice breaking as she looked at the collapsing roof of Second Chance Paws. "Everything I built... it's all gone."
"It was wood and glass, Elena," Adrian said, his amber eyes burning with an intense, unyielding promise. "We'll rebuild it. Twice as big. On my land, by the harbor. Where no one will ever touch it again."
"I can't just take your money—"
"You're not taking anything," Adrian corrected gently, taking one of the tiny puppies from her arms and setting it carefully inside his coat pocket, right over his heart. "We're building it together. Now, stand up."

Elena looked up into his face. The firelight flickered across his sharp features, casting a warm, golden glow over the dark storm. She took a deep, shuddering breath, nodded, and placed her hand in his.
