Chapter 10 - A New Dawn on the Harbor

Six months later, the morning sun rose over the Boston harbor, casting a brilliant, golden light across the white stone facade of the brand-new *Second Chance Paws & Sanctuary*.
It wasn't a rundown warehouse anymore. It was a state-of-the-art rescue facility with sprawling indoor runs, heated floors, a professional veterinary clinic, and a wide outdoor yard enclosed by black iron fencing that overlooked the sparkling Atlantic.
Inside the bright, sunlit lobby, Elena stood behind a polished oak reception desk, wearing a clean canvas apron over a simple blue dress, laughing as a pair of golden retriever puppies tumbled over each other around her ankles.
The brass bell above the front door chimed softly.
Elena looked up, expecting a volunteer or a local adoption candidate.
Instead, Adrian Mercer walked through the door.
He wasn't wearing his heavy dark wool coat today. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking entirely relaxed, the harsh lines around his mouth softened into something permanent and deeply content.
And trotting right beside him—completely off-leash, wearing a brand-new leather collar with a gleaming silver tag—was Goliath.
The massive Cane Corso walked straight over to the reception desk, planted his heavy front paws on the wood, and let out a soft huff, waiting for his morning peanut-butter biscuit.
Elena reached under the counter, pulling out a treat and handing it to him with practiced ease. Goliath took it so gently his teeth barely grazed her skin.
Adrian walked around the counter, stepping close enough that Elena could feel the familiar, comforting scent of cedarwood and sea salt. He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder as he watched the puppies play.
"You're late," Elena murmured, leaning back against his chest with a soft smile.
"I had to stop by the city council," Adrian replied, his voice a warm rumble against her ear.
"Did they give you trouble about the new zoning permits for the eastern wing?"
"They didn't dare," Adrian said smoothly, pressing a light kiss to the side of her neck. "Turns out, when you buy out the entire shipping board and donate three million dollars to the municipal park fund, people are very accommodating about dog shelters."
Elena let out a soft laugh, turning around in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "You are an impossible man, Adrian Mercer."

"And you're stuck with me," he said, his amber eyes dancing with quiet amusement and absolute, unwavering devotion.
Outside, the gulls cried over the harbor, the waves crashed gently against the stone seawall, and for the first time in his life, the master of the Mercer syndicate was exactly where he belonged.
