Chapter 9 - The Unraveling of Warren

Three days later, the private library of the Caldwell estate smelled of rich tobacco and expensive leather.
Warren Caldwell sat behind his massive mahogany desk, tapping his gold fountain pen rhythmically against the blotter. The door swung open without a knock, and Nathan strode into the room like a conqueror returning from the front lines.
"You're looking chipper, Grandfather," Nathan said coolly, taking a seat across the desk without being invited.
Warren lowered his pen and peered over his reading glasses, a knowing, triumphant smirk playing on his wrinkled lips. "Grant is in federal custody, the board has unanimously reaffirmed your voting control, and the company’s stock jumped four points this morning. I'd say my plan worked to absolute perfection."
Nathan leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest, his dark eyes fixed on the old man with unyielding coldness.
"You used an innocent woman as bait," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave. "You knew Grant was embezzling, you knew he was hunting her, and you threw her into my path to force my hand."
Warren didn't even flinch. He simply chuckled, a dry, raspy sound. "Business, Nathan, is about leverage. I gave you a ruthless, brilliant woman who had every reason to tear my family apart—and instead, you two destroyed my most reckless enemy. You think I made a mistake? Look in the mirror."
Nathan stared at his grandfather for a long, heavy moment. Then, slowly, a cold, confident smile spread across his own face.
"You're right about one thing, Grandfather," Nathan said quietly. "You gave me a brilliant woman."
Warren raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"She audit-checked your personal trust accounts this morning, too," Nathan said smoothly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Turns out, you forgot to declare three offshore real estate holdings to the board back in 2018. The compliance committee is reviewing the paperwork as we speak."
Warren’s arrogant smirk instantly vanished. The color drained from his face as he slammed both hands down on the desk. "You wouldn't."
"Try me," Nathan said, his voice dripping with absolute power. "The old rules are dead, Grandfather. Caldwell Holdings belongs to me now—and my wife and I write our own rules from here on out."

Without waiting for a reply, Nathan turned on his heel and walked out of the library, leaving the old patriarch staring speechlessly at the empty doorway.
