Chapter 8 - The Weight of the Crown

The flashing cameras and screaming reporters were left far behind as Nathan’s Maybach glided smoothly through the gates of the Lake Forest estate.
Inside the car, the silence was no longer suffocating or heavy with suspicion. It was quiet, steady, and charged with a new kind of electric tension.
Emily sat looking out the window, watching the dark oak trees drift past in the moonlight. Her hands were relaxed in her lap for the first time in over a year. The ghost that had hunted her, the threat that had crippled her life, was now sitting in a federal holding cell awaiting trial.
"It's over," Emily whispered, almost to herself.
"It's over," Nathan confirmed softly.
He reached across the seat, his large hand gently covering hers. This time, Emily didn't pull away. She turned her hand over, intertwining her fingers with his.
When they stepped inside the grand foyer of the estate, Mrs. Gable was waiting by the staircase, her stern face softened by a genuine, rare smile.
"Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell," the housekeeper said, bowing her head respectfully.
"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Nathan said firmly. "We won't be needing anything else tonight. Ensure we are not disturbed."
"Right away, sir."
Nathan led Emily up the sweeping staircase, past the landing, and straight to the third-floor master suite. But instead of heading to their separate quarters, Nathan opened the main bedroom door and stood aside, letting her enter first.
The room was warm, lit only by the glowing embers of the fireplace and the pale moonlight streaming through the tall windows.
Emily stopped in the middle of the room. She turned around to face Nathan, her pale blue eyes shining with unshed tears—not of fear, but of profound, overwhelming relief.
"You didn't have to do all of that," Emily said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "You could have just paid Grant off. You could have divorced me and walked away clean."
Nathan walked up to her, closing the distance between them until he could feel the warmth radiating from her body. He reached up, his long, warm fingers gently cupping her jawline, his thumb brushing away a stray tear from her cheek.
"I don't walk away from what is mine, Emily," Nathan said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely sincere. "And from the moment you walked down that aisle and looked like a soldier facing a firing squad, you became mine. I just didn't realize how much I needed you until you started saving me right back."
Emily’s breath hitched. She looked up into his dark, intense eyes, seeing all the walls he had built over a lifetime crumbling away into dust, leaving only the man beneath.
"What happens now?" she whispered. "The contract... the two years..."
Nathan smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that completely transformed his stern face into something devastatingly handsome.
"We stay married," Nathan murmured, leaning down until his lips brushed her ear. "For two years, for twenty years, for as long as you'll have me. Only this time... it won't be a trap."
Emily’s heart soared. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her, and pressed her lips softly against his.

The kiss started as a fragile question, a hesitant exploration, but it quickly deepened into a fierce, passionate promise of a brand-new beginning.
