Chapter 37 - The Iron Heart

The federal tactical units began to panic, an orderly retreat threatening to devolve into a catastrophic stampede. "Evacuate the pier! Fall back beyond the two-mile perimeter!" Miller shouted into his radio.
"There is no two-mile perimeter for an EMP-dirty warhead!" Michael yelled, his voice rising with absolute clarity and authority that silenced the chaos around him. "If this warhead breaches, every hospital, power station, and communication node from San Diego to San Francisco shuts down permanently! Lauren, get behind the armored transport!"
"I'm not leaving you, Michael!" I screamed, grabbing his tactical vest with both hands, refusing to yield an inch. "You don't know how to disarm the electronic trigger!"
"I know how the housing is constructed," Michael said, his eyes meeting mine with infinite tenderness amidst the howling storm of sirens and flashing lights. "Julian designed the outer shell using the exact metallurgical blueprints our father taught us in the forge. The locking mechanism is a dual-shear mechanical interlock. You can't hack it from the outside; it requires manual counter-torque to sever the primary circuit before the digital clock hits zero."
"You’ll take a lethal dose of radiation if you breach the lead shielding," I wept, tears cutting through the grime on my cheeks.
"Then I take the dose," Michael said softly. He pulled the silver chain from beneath his tactical vest—the Medal of Honor that had been dragged through mud, slander, and blood. He unclasped it and placed the heavy ribbon around my neck, tucking it against my heart. "Keep this safe for me, Lauren. It belongs to the men of Shok Valley. But my heart belongs to you."
Before I could scream his name, Michael grabbed a heavy pneumatic iron crowbar from an emergency maintenance rack on the crane tower and sprinted toward the glowing container.
"Michael, no!"
The federal agents tried to hold me back, but I tore out of their grip, running to the edge of the safety perimeter. The digital display on the container door read: **01:14... 01:13... 01:12...**
Michael jammed the heavy iron bar between the reinforced steel latches of the container’s service hatch. His muscles bulged against the fabric of his torn uniform, his veins standing out like thick ropes along his neck. The sheer physical power of a man who had forged iron with hammer and anvil for a decade was unleashed against the cold, mechanized malice of his brother’s creation.
The steel screamed. Sparks cascaded in violent sheets as the titanium welds began to twist under his relentless leverage.
**00:45... 00:44...**
"Break!" Michael bellowed, his voice carrying the agony of every lost soldier, every lie told by the Vance dynasty, and every tear shed in the quiet mountains of Colorado. "BREAK!"

With a deafening shriek of tearing metal, the primary locking bar snapped.
