Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The remainder of the dinner passed in a surreal, dreamlike haze.

Throughout the meal, Andrew made sure Evelyn was treated with absolute deference. The senior waitstaff, usually aloof and rushed, attended to her every need with military precision. Across the table, various city council members and corporate titans who had previously treated Evelyn like part of the hotel's interior decor were now falling over themselves to make eye contact, offering obsequious smiles and raising their glasses in silent toast.

Evelyn handled it all with a calm, icy poise that she didn't even know she possessed. Years of watching Megan handle high-society sycophants had taught her exactly how to play the game—only now, she wasn't hiding behind the curtain. She was the main event.

When the dinner plates were cleared away, Andrew leaned in close, his shoulder brushing hers.

"Are you ready for your close-up?" he whispered, a faint smirk playing on his lips.

"What do you mean?" Evelyn asked, turning her head slightly.

Before Andrew could answer, the lights in the grand ballroom dimmed, and the emcee tapped the microphone on the central stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the emcee announced nervously, glancing over toward the head table. "If I could have your attention for a moment. We’d like to invite our chairman, Mr. Andrew Reed, to the stage to say a few words about the future of the foundation."

Polite, rolling applause echoed through the room as Andrew stood up. But instead of walking straight to the microphone, he turned, extended his hand toward Evelyn, and said, "Come with me."

Evelyn hesitated for a split second, then placed her hand in his. Together, they walked up the velvet-carpeted steps to the center stage, bathed in the warm, golden glow of the spotlight.

Andrew took the microphone from the stand, his commanding presence instantly silencing the room.

"Thank you all for coming tonight," Andrew began, his rich baritone carrying effortlessly across the hall. "Every year, we stand up here and talk about community, about upliftment, about the generous donors who fund our programs. But tonight, I want to talk about something else."

He paused, his dark eyes sweeping over the crowd before landing squarely on the front-row table where several foundation board members sat looking increasingly uneasy.

"For the past three years, this foundation has operated under a culture of extraction," Andrew continued, his voice hardening. "We have celebrated figureheads while the true engine of our organization—the people who actually do the work, who solve the crises, who carry the heavy burdens behind the scenes—have been systematically silenced, marginalized, and erased."

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the room. Board members began shifting uncomfortably in their seats.

"Earlier today, I witnessed an administrative purge," Andrew said, his tone razor-sharp. "A dedicated employee—someone who has saved this foundation from financial and operational ruin multiple times—was unceremoniously stripped of her rightful place at this gala to make room for political favors. That era of corruption and casual cruelty ends tonight."

Andrew turned his head, looking directly at Evelyn.

"Effective immediately, Megan Price's position has been terminated, and a full forensic audit of her administration is underway," Andrew announced to a stunned, dead-silent room. "Furthermore, the Board of Directors will undergo an immediate restructuring. And starting tomorrow morning, the operations of the Reed Community Foundation will be led by someone who actually knows how to run them with integrity."

Andrew lifted his hand, pointing directly at Evelyn.
