Chapter 8 - Crossfire

The shadows on the stairwell stretched long and distorted under the flickering light.
"Vincent!" a voice echoed up from the landing. It was Mateo, out of breath, his usually stoic expression twisted into a mask of urgency. "We've been compromised. The harbor warehouse—it’s hit. And they're tracking your signal here."
Vincent didn't lower his gun. His eyes remained locked on the dark stairwell. "Who?"
"Sabrina’s father," Mateo spat out, stepping onto the landing with his own weapon drawn. "He’s backed into a corner. He knows you're cutting him out of the docks contract. He’s making a play."
Emma peeked out from behind Vincent’s broad shoulder, her blood running cold. "A play? You mean an assassination attempt?"
"Call it a hostile takeover," Vincent said grimly, not taking his eyes off the shadows. He grabbed Emma’s arm, pulling her toward the back fire escape door. "Mateo, get the car. Now."
"Boss, the front is blocked," Mateo warned, his radio crackling with static. "Three cars just pulled up. We're boxed in."
Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. This wasn't high society gossip anymore. This wasn't snide remarks about her cheap dress or hairspray. This was real blood, real bullets, and a war she had accidentally stumbled right into the middle of.
"Vincent," Emma whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Look at me."
Vincent paused, glancing down at her, his dark eyes burning with intensity.
"I'm not running away," Emma said, her voice steadying. "And I'm not hiding. Whatever happens, we face it together."
Vincent’s expression softened for a fraction of a second—a profound, fierce devotion flashing across his face. Then he nodded sharply.
"Mateo," Vincent barked, his voice echoing in the narrow hallway. "Secure the perimeter. Let them come."
Footsteps rushed up the final flight of stairs. The metal door at the end of the hall rattled violently as someone kicked it open.
Two men in black tactical gear burst through the doorway, weapons raised.
In a blur of motion that defied human reaction, Vincent moved. Gunshots deafened the small hallway, the roar of gunfire echoing off the concrete walls like rolling thunder. Smoke filled the air, smelling of cordite and burning dust.
One of the intruders dropped instantly. The second lunged toward Vincent, their weapons clashing in a brutal, hand-to-hand struggle.
Emma didn't scream. Panic surged through her, sharpening her focus. Seeing the second attacker's gun pointing directly at Vincent's side, she didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy, metal fire extinguisher off the wall bracket, swung it with every ounce of strength she possessed, and slammed it directly into the back of the attacker’s head.
The man collapsed like a sack of wet cement.
Silence fell over the hallway once more, broken only by the heavy breathing of Vincent and Mateo.
Vincent spun around, his chest heaving, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on Emma, unharmed, holding the dented fire extinguisher.
Vincent let out a shaky breath, dropped his gun to the floor, and pulled Emma into his arms so hard it knocked the wind out of her.
"Are you insane?" he whispered fiercely into her hair. "You could have been killed!"
"We make a pretty good team, don't we?" Emma muttered against his chest, a shaky laugh escaping her lips.
May you like
"Too good," Vincent murmured, kissing the top of her head. But the war wasn't over yet. The architect of the attack was still out there.
