Chapter 3 - Wolves in Silk

The music from the string quartet seemed to fade into a dull hum, swallowed by the suffocating silence that suddenly settled around the small circle of elites.

Sabrina Hale didn’t bother to lower her voice. Why should she? In this room, surrounded by old money, bloodlines, and power built on decades of illicit empire, Sabrina was royalty. She stood tall in her gold silk gown, her gaze locked onto Emma with a mixture of amusement and supreme disdain.

"It must be so fascinating for you, my dear," Sabrina continued, taking a slow step closer, her voice like velvet stretched over broken glass. "Stepping out of the working class for one night. Seeing how the real world lives. Just try not to trip over your own feet—those floors are Italian marble, and I’m quite certain you couldn't afford to replace a single tile if you cracked it."

A few chuckles rippled through the small knot of onlookers. An older man with silver hair and cold eyes sipped his champagne, watching the spectacle as if it were a particularly entertaining theater production.

Emma’s jaw tightened. Her fingers gripped her small silver clutch so hard her knuckles turned white. Every old insecurity—every apartment eviction notice, every time she had been made to feel small by people who inherited everything they owned—threatened to bubble to the surface.

She opened her mouth, ready to deliver a scathing, razor-sharp retail worker comeback that would make Sabrina choke on her champagne.

Before a single word could escape, a heavy, warm hand settled firmly against the small of Emma’s back.

The heat of Vincent’s palm burned right through the dark blue fabric of her dress. It was an anchor in the storm.

Vincent didn't look at Sabrina. He looked down at Emma, his gaze softening by a fraction before he turned his dark, lethal eyes toward the blonde woman. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

"Sabrina," Vincent’s voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the murmurs like a scalpel. "Your manners are slipping. Must be the altitude."

Sabrina’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though she quickly recovered, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "I’m just being realistic, Vincent. You can’t possibly expect to parade... *this* around our circles and pretend it’s anything more than a temporary distraction. We all know who you belong with. Who your family expects you to marry."

"My family," Vincent said, his voice dropping into that low, flat register that made even seasoned mob bosses swallow hard, "expects me to do whatever the hell I want. And right now, I want to stand here with Emma."

Sabrina’s eyes flashed with genuine anger now, stripped of their sweet veneer. "She doesn't belong here, Vincent. She doesn't know the first thing about us. She probably smells like hairspray and cheap perfume."

Emma felt a hot spike of humiliation rise in her chest. That was the line. That was the moment she realized she was entirely out of her depth in this gilded cage of monsters.

She pulled away from Vincent’s touch, stepping back onto the marble floor.

"If you’re ashamed of me, don’t touch me," Emma’s voice was quiet.

That was what made the entire room hear it.

More than sixty people stood beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Moretti family estate, dressed in tuxedos, silk gowns, and the kind of jewelry Emma had only ever seen behind glass. A string quartet had stopped playing. Someone holding a champagne flute froze halfway through a sip.

And Vincent Moretti, the man half the room feared and the other half desperately wanted something from, stood directly in front of Emma with one hand still extended toward her.

Emma stepped back again, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I won’t be the woman you want when nobody important is watching."
