Chapter 9 - The Return to Bennett Valley

The air in the Finger Lakes was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of moist earth, pine needles, and ripening grapes.

A convoy of black SUVs pulled up the winding gravel drive of Bennett Valley Vineyards. Claire stepped out of the lead vehicle, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it threatened to choke her.

Before her stood the grand stone farmhouse her grandfather had built, its cedar roof restored, its wrap-around porch gleaming with fresh paint. Beyond the house, rolling hills covered in endless rows of lush, green Riesling and Cabernet Franc vines stretched down toward the glittering blue waters of the lake.

Waiting near the porch were three elderly men in work boots and denim jackets—men who had worked alongside her father for twenty years.

“Miss Claire!” one of them yelled, tossing his cap into the air.

Tears spilled freely down Claire’s cheeks as she ran forward. Old Thomas, the head vineyard manager, caught her in a bear hug, laughing heartily.

“We heard you were coming back!” Thomas said, wiping a tear from his leathery cheek. “The bank told us three months ago that the vines were going to be ripped out. Then last week, an army of contractors arrived, cleared the mortgage, and told us Samuel Bennett’s daughter was taking over!”

Claire looked back toward the SUV. Dominic stood beside the open door, watching the reunion with a quiet, satisfied smile on his face. He looked out of place in his tailored trousers amidst the rural soil, yet he looked entirely at peace.

“Come,” Claire said, taking Thomas’s hand and walking toward Dominic. “Thomas, I want you to meet my partner. Dominic Vale.”

Thomas looked at Dominic, recognizing the name from the national news, but Dominic extended his hand first, gripping the old worker’s rough palm with genuine respect.

“You took care of Samuel Bennett’s soil,” Dominic said sincerely. “Now we ensure that soil produces the greatest wine on the continent. Anything you need—equipment, irrigation, manpower—you tell Claire, and it will be delivered within forty-eight hours.”

Thomas looked astonished, then nodded vigorously. “Yes, sir! Miss Claire, the old barrel room is ready. We brought up the last batch your father bottled before he passed. We’ve been guarding it with our lives.”

Claire looked at Dominic, her eyes shining through her tears. “Will you join me for a private tasting, Mr. Vale?”

Dominic offered her his arm. “Lead the way, Miss Bennett.”
