Chapter 8 - Scars and Solitude

The aftermath of the Mercer collapse played out with ruthless efficiency over the following week.
Federal authorities raided the Mercer Botanicals facility, seizing tons of illicit precursors and uncovering financial fraud that sent Arthur Mercer into federal custody without bail. Evelyn Mercer, stripped of her social standing, her fortune, and her engagement ring, fled the country on a private charter under the cover of night, a pariah whose name was scrubbed from every charity gala and elite club directory in Manhattan.
Meanwhile, Claire stayed at the Vale estate.
Her hand was healing cleanly under Dr. Chen’s care, the stitches removed to leave a pale, thin silver scar across her palm—a permanent reminder of the night she stepped between death and Dominic Vale.
One afternoon, Claire stood in the estate’s private conservatory, surrounded by sprawling green ferns, rare orchids, and blooming jasmine. She held a glass of water, watching the mist rise from the automated sprinklers, when she heard familiar, quiet footsteps behind her.
Dominic joined her, his jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal muscular forearms crossed over his chest.
“The media has finally moved on to a new scandal,” Dominic said quietly. “A senator caught with offshore funds in Jersey. You’re free to go wherever you want, Claire. The Mercer threat is completely erased.”
Claire looked down at her scar, tracing it with her left index finger. “Free.”
“The Finger Lakes estate is waiting for you,” he continued, though his tone was unusually guarded, almost reluctant. “Mason has already arranged a private security detail for the property. Your father’s old team of field hands has been rehired with full back-pay. You can return to your vines, your cellar, your peace.”
Claire turned to look at him. His face was unreadable, the classic mask of the mafia boss firmly in place. But she had spent days learning to read the subtle notes in his behavior, just as she read the notes in wine.
“Is that what you want, Dominic?” she asked softly. “For me to leave?”
Dominic paused. His gray eyes met hers, intense and unyielding.
“What I want doesn't matter, Claire. I am Dominic Vale. My life is surrounded by men who want my head on a pike and rival syndicates waiting for a single moment of weakness. When Evelyn was my fiancée, it was a political arrangement—a shield of convenience. But anyone who stands close to me for real becomes a target.”
“I’ve already been a target,” Claire said, taking a step toward him. Her heart was beating fast, but her voice was unwavering. “Evelyn tried to destroy me because she thought I was weak. She thought because I work with my hands, because I don't look like a runway model, because I don't play their cruel society games, that I could be crushed without consequences.”
She reached out and placed her hand against Dominic’s chest, right over his heart. He didn't pull away. Beneath her palm, she could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse.
“I am not afraid of your world, Dominic,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I survived your world with my senses intact.”
Dominic looked down at her hand against his chest, then reached up and cupped her face in his warm, calloused palm. His thumb traced her cheekbone with infinite gentleness.
“You are the rarest vintage I have ever encountered, Claire Bennett,” he murmured. “Strong. Uncompromising. Impossible to imitate.”
He leaned down, his lips brushing hers in a slow, searing kiss that tasted of danger, promise, and deep, awakening passion. Claire closed her eyes, leaning into him, her fingers curling into his shirt.
When he finally pulled back, his eyes were burning with an intensity that took her breath away.

“Tomorrow,” Dominic said quietly, “we fly to Bennett Valley together.”
