Chapter 6 - The Master of the Ledger

By the following Monday morning, the collapse of the Vanguard-Sterling conspiracy was no longer an internal rumor; it was a front-page financial disaster dominating every news broadcast in the country.

“FEDERAL WATERFRONT INDICTMENTS UNSEALED: SENATOR STERLING, JULIAN MORETTI, AND EVERETT HARTFIELD CHARGED UNDER RICO ACT; $140M IN ILLEGAL LOGISTICS ASSETS RECOVERED.”

Inside the thirty-eighth-floor executive suite of Vance Maritime Holdings, the morning sun broke over Boston Harbor in a blinding, dazzling expanse of liquid silver.

Blythe sat behind the massive partners desk in a tailored navy wool suit, her reading glasses pushed up into her dark hair, reviewing the final administrative restructuring manifests for Pier Nine.

The heavy oak door connecting her office to Kieran’s suite clicked open.

Kieran walked inside.

He wasn't wearing his suit jacket or his tie. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark trousers, and an unhurried, relaxed posture that made him look ten years younger than the dangerous, suspicious man she had grabbed in the hotel basement seven days earlier.

In his right hand, he carried a heavy silver tray holding two porcelain cups of dark roast coffee and a plate of warm blueberry scones from the North End bakery.

"Good morning, Donna Vance," Kieran said, setting the tray down on the edge of her desk.

Blythe smiled, setting her pen down on the blotter. "Good morning, Don Kieran. Are you serving breakfast now?"

"Only for the woman who dismantled a multi-state racketeering conspiracy with a pair of surgical trauma shears," Kieran countered, leaning against the desk, his gray-blue eyes locking onto hers with a warmth that made her pulse skip a beat.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, flat mahogany box lined with blue velvet, sliding it across the desk toward her.

Blythe paused. "What is this?"

"Open it," he murmured.

Blythe lifted the lid.

Inside rested an official letter from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, conferring the permanent appointment of Executive Director of the Boston Waterfront Community Health & Trauma Network, backed by a thirty-million-dollar private endowment funded entirely by the seized assets of the Vanguard syndicate.

Attached to the letter was a certified cashier's check made out to the United States Department of Education: $32,450.00 – PAID IN FULL.

Tears welled in Blythe’s eyes, blurring the ink on the paper.

She looked up from the desk, meeting his intense, unyielding gaze.

"You paid the debt," she whispered.

"I promised you I would, Blythe," Kieran said softly, stepping around the desk, his large hands gently cupping her face, his thumbs wiping the tears from her cheeks with infinite tenderness.

"You gave me back my harbor. You gave me back my peace. The least I can do... is make sure you never have to worry about the rent again."

He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep, magnificent kiss that tasted of morning coffee, ocean salt, and absolute, permanent sanctuary.
