Chapter 2 - The Viral Snapshot

By 6:00 AM, the cold November dawn was breaking over Boston’s North End in long, bruised ribbons of violet and iron gray.

Blythe sat at the laminate kitchen table of her third-floor walk-up in Southie, nursing an oversized mug of instant black coffee that tasted like burnt battery acid. Her twelve-year-old Toyota was parked three floors below, its radiator hissing faintly in the damp alley, having barely survived the twenty-mile commute home from the Meridian Grand.

She had spent three hours trying to convince herself that the incident in the basement was just a bizarre, theatrical encounter with an arrogant, wealthy guest who enjoyed terrifying local politicians.

Then her phone buzzed against the table.

Once. Twice. Then it began to hum continuously, skittering across the Formica like an angry insect.

She picked it up.

Seventy-four notifications from social media. Eight missed calls from Sarah, her head nurse supervisor at Massachusetts General. Three text messages from unlisted numbers.

Blythe tapped the screen.

The top trending post across every regional news app, social media feed, and high-society gossip blog was dominated by a single, high-resolution photograph taken through the frosted glass of the Meridian Grand’s service corridor:

THE KING’S NEW QUEEN? Reclusive Billionaire & Shipping Mogul Kieran Vance Seen in Private Basement Corridor with Mysterious Woman at the Alderton Gala.

The image was breathtakingly clear.

The angle was tight, captured from the shadows near the freight elevators. It showed Kieran Vance towering in his navy bespoke suit, looking down with an expression of intense, proprietary focus, while Blythe—wearing her white service jacket, her dark hair slightly coming loose from its pins—stood flush against his chest, her slender hand gripping his sleeve with an intimacy that looked utterly rehearsed, completely passionate, and entirely undeniable.

Below the photo, the comments were multiplying at a rate of three hundred per minute:

—"Who is she?! That’s the Vance family signet ring on his finger!" —"Isn't Kieran Vance the guy the Senate Judiciary Committee has been trying to subpoena for three years over the harbor leases?" —"She looks like a waitress. Look at the service jacket." —"Hartfield’s office just issued a statement saying he resigned from the zoning board 'for personal health reasons.' Holy crap, she has him wrapped around her finger."

Blythe dropped the phone onto the table, her stomach plummeting through the floorboards.

"No," she breathed, running both hands through her hair. "No, no, no."

Before she could stand, the unmistakable, heavy rumble of a high-displacement engine vibrated through the floor of her kitchen.

Blythe walked slowly to the small bay window, pulling back the dusty lace curtain with two fingers.

Parked in the narrow alley below her fire escape, blocking the garbage trucks and three delivery vans, sat two matte-black Cadillac Escalades.

Stepping out of the passenger side of the lead vehicle was the broad-shouldered security guard from the hotel hallway. He wore a crisp dark overcoat, his sunglasses pushed onto his forehead, scanning the fire escape with mechanical, professional vigilance.

The driver’s side of the second car opened.

Kieran Vance stepped onto the wet asphalt.

He was dressed in a tailored charcoal topcoat over a dark sweater and slacks, looking completely unbothered by the freezing drizzle that was beginning to turn the gutters of South Boston into slush. He looked up at her window.

His gray-blue eyes met hers through the glass three floors above.

He didn't wave. He didn't smile.

He simply lifted a thin leather portfolio in his right hand, pointed two fingers toward her front door, and began walking up the exterior stairs with the calm, terrifying inevitability of an incoming tide.
