Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of the Empire

The transition of Vale Holdings from a feared underground syndicate into a strictly legitimate international freight and logistics conglomerate was not without its casualties.

Two underbosses in Queens attempted a hostile mutiny three days after Moretti’s arrest, believing Dominic’s retirement was a sign of weakness. They made the fatal mistake of cornering Miller in a parking garage in Long Island City.

Miller didn't call Dominic for permission. He handled the situation with the quiet, devastating efficiency of a man who had finally decided he was too old for criminal theatrics. By the time Dominic received the encrypted text message—*“Resolved. Shipping lanes secure.”*—the mutiny was already history, swept under the rug by local authorities who were only too happy to let Vale Holdings clean house.

Meanwhile, Evelyn and Dominic spent their weekend touring properties outside the city—not towering penthouses in Manhattan or heavily guarded compounds in the Hamptons, but sprawling, sunlit colonial homes in Westchester County with wraparound porches, ancient oak trees, and backyards that backed up against a quiet creek.

“This one,” Evelyn said, standing on the grass behind a sprawling, white-paneled house with slate shingles and a red front door. She looked back at Dominic, who was leaning against the rental car with his hands in his pockets, watching her with an expression of quiet adoration.

“You like it?” Dominic asked, walking over to join her.

“It has a kitchen with a farmhouse sink,” Evelyn said, smiling as the autumn breeze ruffled her hair. “And there’s enough room in the backyard for a very large dog, a treehouse, and a baby who will undoubtedly drive us both insane in about seven months.”

Dominic wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder and placing his large hand gently over her growing stomach. “Then we’ll buy it. Cash. No mortgages, no shell companies, no leverage.”

“Just us?” Evelyn asked softly, turning her head to look up at him.

May you like

“Just us,” Dominic agreed, kissing the top of her head.
