Chapter 10 - The Open Door

The front gate of the Westchester estate was wrought iron, flanked by fieldstone pillars covered in ivy.

An elderly man in a gray tweed suit stood patiently by the call box, holding a thick, wax-sealed manila envelope bearing the crest of the Vale family estate.

When Dominic and Evelyn walked down the stone pathway together, hand in hand, the attorney smiled warmly and tipped his hat.

“Mr. Vale. Mrs. Vale,” the lawyer said, his voice carrying the dry, crisp cadence of old money and proper legal proceedings.

“Mr. Vance,” Dominic nodded respectfully. “You didn't need to drive out here yourself.”

“Protocol required it, Dominic,” the lawyer replied, handing over a sleek digital signature pad and the heavy envelope. “Your father left explicit instructions. The moment you stepped away from the syndicates and established a legitimate, domestic foundation—the moment you chose family over the empire—this trust was to be unlocked.”

Evelyn signed the pad first, her handwriting steady and clear. Then Dominic signed beneath her, his signature bold and unyielding.

The attorney handed over the heavy envelope. “Everything inside is now legally transferred to the Evelyn and Dominic Vale Family Trust. Clean, audited, and entirely legitimate.”

“Thank you, counselor,” Dominic said.

The lawyer nodded, turned around, and walked back toward his vintage town car parked on the gravel shoulder.

Dominic and Evelyn walked slowly back up the stone pathway toward the house, the afternoon sun casting long, golden shadows across the lawn.

Evelyn opened the envelope.

Inside wasn't a list of offshore bank accounts or hidden ledgers. It was a single, handwritten note on heavy parchment paper, written in a sprawling, elegant hand by a mother Dominic had lost too young.

*To my son,*

*If you are reading this, it means you finally figured out that an empire is only as strong as the people standing beside you. Do not look back at the shadows. Build a home where the doors are never locked out of fear, but always open out of love.*

*Welcome home.*

Evelyn folded the letter and slipped it into her pocket.

They walked up the steps of the wraparound porch, stopping just in front of the bright red front door.

Miller was still at the grill in the backyard, shouting something unintelligible about a grease fire, while laughter from Evelyn’s friends drifted across the lawn on the warm spring breeze.

Dominic turned to Evelyn, his dark eyes shining with a deep, unbreakable devotion that no empire could ever rival. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing across her skin.

“What do you want to do now, Mrs. Vale?” he asked softly.

Evelyn smiled, looking past him toward the sunlit lawn, the sprawling green trees, and the bright, endless future waiting for them just beyond the threshold.

She reached out, took the brass doorknob in her hand, and pushed the door wide open.

“Let’s go inside,” she said.
