Chapter 7 - Blood and Snow

By noon the following day, Highspire Estate had become a flurry of controlled, luxurious chaos.

The blizzard had finally passed, leaving the Adirondack peaks glistening beneath a crisp, sapphire-blue sky. Outside, snowplows cleared the private roads, while inside, a private team of high-end stylists, tailors, and jewelers flown in directly from Paris and Milan filled the west wing’s private parlor.

Claire stood before a three-way, floor-to-ceiling mirror, completely unable to recognize the woman staring back at her.

The dress Lorenzo had commissioned was an absolute masterpiece of haute couture, designed not to hide her curves, but to celebrate them with breathtaking audacity. It was made of heavy, midnight-blue silk velvet that hugged her waist, flattered the generous swell of her bust, and fell into a dramatic, sweeping train that whispered against the hardwood floor.

The neckline was an off-the-shoulder sweetheart cut that framed her porcelain skin and collarbones, accentuating her lush, feminine silhouette with absolute elegance. Her dark auburn hair had been swept into a sophisticated, loose chignon, with soft tendrils framing her face.

Around her neck rested the *Vance Sapphire*—a breathtaking twenty-carat, cushion-cut Burmese sapphire suspended on a platinum chain encrusted with brilliant-cut diamonds.

“Madonna mia,” Rosa whispered from the doorway, clasping her hands together with tears shimmering in her eyes. “You look… stunning, my dear. A true principessa.”

Claire swallowed hard, looking at her reflection. For thirty years, dressing rooms had been places of tears and humiliation. She had squeezed into cheap polyester dresses that cut into her ribs, left zippers half-up, and cried in department store stalls because standard sizes treated her like a crime.

Now, looking at herself in the tailored velvet, she didn't see flaws. She saw power. She saw beauty. She saw a woman who could stand beside an apex predator without bowing her head.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Lorenzo stepped into the room.

He wore a bespoke, midnight-black tuxedo that broadened his already imposing shoulders, a crisp white pique shirt, and a black silk bow tie tied with surgical precision. But the moment his dark eyes found Claire, the aristocratic mob boss vanished, replaced by a man completely, utterly struck by awe.

He stopped in his tracks, his gaze traveling slowly from the hem of her velvet gown, over the luscious sweep of her hips, across the swell of her bosom, to the fire in her green eyes.

“Rosa,” Lorenzo murmured, never breaking eye contact with Claire. “Leave us.”

“Si, signore.” Rosa slipped out, pulling the heavy double doors shut behind her.

Lorenzo walked toward Claire, his steps deliberate and measured. He stopped behind her, meeting her gaze in the triple mirror. His large, warm hands rested gently on her bare shoulders, his dark skin contrasting starkly with the ivory glow of her flesh.

“Do you see it now, Claire?” he whispered near her ear, his breath warm against her neck.

Claire swallowed, her heart pounding. “See what?”

“What I’ve seen for eight years,” Lorenzo replied, his hands sliding down her velvet-clad arms to lace his fingers through hers. “You were never too much, Claire. The world was simply too small to hold you.”

Tears pricked her eyes, but she held them back, leaning her head back against his solid chest. “I’m scared, Lorenzo. Not of Tarasov. Not of the gala. I’m scared of… of waking up and finding out this was all just a freezing hallucination in my broken-down car on I-81.”

Lorenzo turned her around in his arms, his expression intensely serious. He lifted her chin with his thumb, tilting her face up toward his.

“I am real, Claire,” he swore, his voice like iron forged in fire. “This house is real. My men are real. And the vow I make to you tonight is eternal. After tonight, you and Owen will never know fear, hunger, or cold again. You are under my protection. You are mine.”

He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, searing kiss that left her knees weak and her soul anchored.

Before the spell could break, the door cracked open.

Owen bounded into the room, wearing a miniature tuxedo that made him look like a pint-sized secret agent. Behind him walked Daniel, carrying a discreet, leather-bound case.

“Mom!” Owen gasped, skidding to a halt on the Persian rug. “You look like a movie star!”

Claire laughed, a bright, joyous sound that filled the room, and knelt down—velvet train pooling around her—to pull her son into a tight embrace. “And you look like the most handsome gentleman in the world, Owen.”

“Mr. Vance gave me a watch!” Owen said proudly, showing off a miniature stainless-steel timepiece on his little wrist. “He said I’m in charge of the fortress while you guys are in the city.”

Lorenzo stepped forward, resting a hand on Owen’s shoulder. “That’s right. Commander Owen is the commanding officer of Highspire until we return. Twenty guards take orders from you. But your first order is to finish your ice cream and be in bed by nine.”

Owen giggled. “Yes, sir!”

Claire looked up at Lorenzo, her heart overflowing with an affection so profound it terrified her. He wasn't just saving her life; he was restoring her son’s dignity. He was giving Owen a father figure who exuded strength, honor, and protective grace.

Daniel stepped forward, holding out a sterile swab. “It’s time, sir.”

Claire stood, holding Owen’s hand. “Owen, baby, remember that game we talked about? Daniel is going to brush the inside of your cheek with a little cotton stick. It won't hurt at all.”

Owen nodded bravely. “Like the dentist?”

“Much faster than the dentist,” Lorenzo assured him.

Daniel gently swabbed the inside of Owen’s cheek, sealing the sample into the specialized reader connected to the titanium ledger drive.

For three agonized seconds, the reader whirred silently.

Then, a clear, chiming tone echoed through the parlor. The LED shifted from a pulsing red to a steady, triumphant emerald green.

*Pediatric Genetic Key Confirmed,* the digital display flashed. *Master Ledger Decrypted. 4,821 Files Extracted.*

Daniel let out a low whistle, looking up at Lorenzo with fierce triumph. “We have it, Boss. Every offshore account. Every payroll slip for three federal judges and two state senators. Every shipping manifest for Tarasov’s trafficking ring.”

Lorenzo’s eyes flashed with absolute, lethal certainty.

“Transmit the unredacted files directly to the Director of the FBI and the head of the DEA via our secure proxy,” Lorenzo commanded, turning Claire toward the private elevator that led to the helipad. “Keep the financial kill-switches on my personal terminal.”

He offered his arm to Claire.

“Come, Claire,” Lorenzo said, his voice dripping with smooth, aristocratic menace. “Let us go watch a monster fall.”
