Chapter 6 - Under Siege

The silver music box looked utterly harmless sitting under the soft lamplight of the library desk.
Claire stepped forward, her fingers trembling as she reached out to touch the tarnished lid. The cold metal sent a phantom chill through her skin, a lingering echo of the nightmare Julian had tied around her neck.
“Don't touch the perimeter seam,” Lorenzo warned gently, stepping up behind her. His broad chest pressed lightly against her back, an anchor of solid heat that chased away the residual panic.
Daniel pulled a pair of specialized anti-static gloves onto his hands. Using a micro-stylus, he carefully pressed a hidden pinhole beneath the music box’s winding key.
With a soft, mechanical click, the velvet-lined bottom of the antique popped open.
Inside, there were no gears, no metal comb, and no musical cylinder. In their place rested a sleek, black titanium drive, smaller than a stick of chewing gum, pulsing with a faint, rhythmic blue LED.
“It’s a hardware-encrypted quantum ledger,” Daniel murmured, awe lacing his voice. “Julian didn't build this. He stole a military-grade prototype from Tarasov’s financial hub in Zurich.”
“Can we access the data?” Lorenzo asked, his tone flat and calculating.
“Not without the biometric hash,” Daniel replied, adjusting a portable forensic tablet. “Julian set a fail-deadly protocol. If the drive is plugged into an unauthorized terminal without the correct cryptographic signature, it initiates a thermite micro-charge. It will melt the silicon into a puddle of slag within half a second.”
Lorenzo looked down at Claire. “The note Julian left you. What were the exact words?”
Claire closed her eyes, dredging up the memory of the scrawled handwriting that had accompanied the package two weeks ago.
*‘Give this to Owen when he turns eighteen. Tell him I’m sorry.’*
“He said to give it to Owen,” Claire whispered, her eyes flying open in sudden horror. “Lorenzo… he didn't use my biometrics. He used Owen’s.”
Daniel ran the tablet’s sensor over the drive’s recessed glass panel. The screen flashed a red prompt: *Awaiting Pediatric Genetic Key - Saliva or Capillary Blood.*
“The sick bastard,” Lorenzo growled, his voice vibrating with pure, murderous disgust. “Julian knew that if Tarasov captured him, he could trade his son’s life for his own. He locked four hundred million dollars behind a six-year-old child’s DNA.”
Claire felt sick. A cold, suffocating rage swept through her. Julian hadn't left Owen a legacy. He had turned their little boy into a biological key for a cartel’s stolen fortune.
“We destroy it,” Claire said fiercely, grabbing Lorenzo’s forearm. “Melt it. Throw it in the fireplace. I don't care about the money! I don't care about the ledger! I want this thing away from my son!”
“If we destroy it, Claire,” Lorenzo said, turning her around by the shoulders to face him squarely, “Tarasov will never stop hunting you.”
Claire’s breath hitched. “What?”
“Tarasov’s entire empire depends on what is inside this drive,” Lorenzo explained with icy logic. “The names of the corrupt officials who shield him, the bank routing numbers for his shell companies, the offshore accounts in Panama and Cyprus. If the drive is destroyed, Tarasov loses his leverage—and he will spend every dollar he has left torturing everyone associated with Julian Croft out of pure, unadulterated vengeance.”
Lorenzo’s dark eyes bored into hers with absolute certainty.
“The only way to guarantee Owen’s safety—and your freedom—is to use this ledger to utterly dismantle Viktor Tarasov. We strip him of his money, his political protection, and his soldiers. We cut the head off the serpent. Only then will you truly be safe.”
Claire looked at the glowing blue drive, then at Lorenzo. “How do we do that?”
“Tomorrow evening, Viktor Tarasov is hosting an exclusive, high-stakes charity gala at the St. Regis in Manhattan,” Lorenzo said, a predatory smile curling at the edges of his mouth. “The event is a front. It is an annual gathering of every corrupt politician, judge, and foreign oligarch who launders money through his network. They believe Tarasov is untouchable.”
“You’re going to walk into his gala?” Claire gasped.
“We are going to walk into his gala,” Lorenzo corrected smoothly.
Claire blinked, stunned. “We?”
“You are coming with me, Claire,” Lorenzo said, his thumb brushing her lower lip. “Owen will remain here, guarded by forty of my best men in a bunker that can withstand a tactical nuclear strike. But you and I will walk into Tarasov’s lion’s den together.”
“Lorenzo, look at me!” Claire cried, stepping back and gesturing wildly at her oversized sweater and fleece pants. “I’m an ER nurse from upstate New York! I don't know how to navigate high society! I don't belong in a ballroom with oligarchs and billionaires! I’ll humiliate you! I’ll stand out like a sore thumb!”
Lorenzo closed the distance between them in a single, fluid stride. He caught her by the waist, pulling her flush against his chest, his gaze fierce, passionate, and commanding.
“You will stand out, Claire,” he whispered fiercely against her mouth. “Because while those hollow, artificial men surround themselves with starving, decorative mannequins, I will enter that room with a goddess. A real woman. A woman who survived the blizzard, saved lives, and holds my heart in the palm of her hand.”
He kissed her, hard and possessive, stealing the breath from her lungs before she could utter another self-deprecating word.

“Tomorrow, Claire Bennett,” Lorenzo murmured against her lips, “I am going to dress you like the queen you are. And together, we are going to burn Tarasov’s empire to the ground.”
