Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rat

While Julian was being led out of the auditorium in handcuffs, across town, Chloe Thorne was attempting to execute her final escape.

Inside her luxury high-rise apartment in the financial district, two Louis Vuitton suitcases lay open on the king-sized bed, overflowing with designer jewelry, stacks of undeclared cash, and private passports. Chloe was on the phone, screaming frantically into her AirPods as she threw silk dresses into the bags.

"What do you mean my accounts are frozen?" she shrieked. "That’s my personal account! The Cayman transfers were already verified last week!"

The voice on the other end was cold and detached. "Miss Thorne, the Department of Justice issued an emergency asset freeze across all affiliated LLCs under the Aegis Horizon umbrella thirty minutes ago. Your access to the Miami property and foreign banking routing numbers has been entirely terminated. We are legally prohibited from executing any further transactions."

Chloe threw her phone against the mirrored wardrobe, shattering the glass into a spiderweb of cracks.

"No! No, no, no!" she screamed, tearing at her hair.

She had thought she was untouchable. She had believed Julian was too weak, Clara too proud, and the Whitmore family too terrified of scandal to fight back. She had built her entire existence on manipulation, believing that a pretty smile, fake tears, and corporate extortion could make her royalty.

And now, in less than twenty-four hours, the entire castle had collapsed on top of her.

A sudden, sharp pounding echoed against her apartment door.

"Chloe Thorne! Open the door! Federal agents! We have a warrant for your arrest!"

Panic seized her. Chloe grabbed her purse, stuffed a few remaining bundles of cash inside, and bolted toward the secondary balcony exit that connected to the building's exterior service stairway. She burst out into the damp, cold morning air, running down the metal stairs in her high heels, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

She made it down three flights before she reached the parking garage. She threw herself toward her luxury sports car—a silver Porsche Julian had leased for her under the company’s fleet account.

She clicked the remote, threw herself into the driver's seat, and slammed the door shut, locking it from the inside.

"I can get to the private airstrip," she muttered hysterically, tears blurring her vision as she stabbed the ignition button. "I can take my brother’s plane to the Bahamas—"

Before the engine could roar to life, two unmarked black SUVs slammed into the front and rear bumpers of the Porsche, boxing her in with terrifying, concussive force.

Sirens wailed inside the enclosed garage, deafening and disorienting.

Four armed federal agents stepped out of the vehicles, weapons drawn, surrounding the Porsche.

"Driver, step out of the vehicle! Turn off the engine and put your hands on the steering wheel!"

Chloe stared through the windshield, paralyzed by terror. She saw her reflection in the rearview mirror: the mascara running down her hollow cheeks, the fear in her wild, dilated eyes. There was no President Julian to protect her now. There was no corporate elevator to guard. There was only the cold, unyielding reality of the law.

Slowly, her hands shaking so violently she could barely grip the wheel, Chloe Thorne unlocked the door and stepped out into the cold concrete garage, dropping to her knees as the handcuffs clicked tight around her wrists.
