Chapter 5 - The Mother-in-Law’s Wrath

Eleanor Whitmore was not a woman who tolerated weakness.
The matriarch of the Whitmore dynasty had survived three corporate takeovers, two hostile proxy battles, and the death of her late husband with her spine perfectly straight and her pearls immaculate. At seventy, she was still the social anchor of the family, commanding absolute deference from every corner of high society.
Her private estate on the outskirts of the city was aglow with soft amber lights that evening. A long mahogany dining table had been prepared for what was supposed to be an intimate family celebration of her sixtieth birthday.
When Julian and I arrived, the air in the estate was thick with unresolved tension. Julian looked like a walking corpse, his face pale, his eyes rimmed with red, having spent the car ride alternating between frantic apologies and veiled threats of what would happen if I destroyed his reputation.
"You're late," Eleanor said as we entered the grand drawing room. She sat on a velvet settee, sipping dry martini, her silver hair styled into an intricate crown. "Arthur called me earlier. He told me about the board meeting. Clara, congratulations on your appointment. Though I must admit, I expected my son to be the one taking Arthur's chair."
Julian flinched, stepping forward with an awkward, rehearsed smile. "Mother... happy birthday. It was a strategic decision by the board. Clara and I are working as a team."
"A team?" Eleanor raised an eyebrow, her sharp gaze cutting between the two of us. "You look like you've been run over by a freight train, Julian. And Clara looks like she’s preparing to execute a firing squad. What happened?"
Before Julian could answer, the heavy double doors of the drawing room swung open, and Eleanor’s elderly butler, Thomas, appeared with a deeply troubled expression.
"Madam," Thomas said quietly. "There is a young woman at the front gate. She bypassed security by claiming to have an urgent personal delivery from President Julian. She is... quite hysterical, ma'am. She insists on seeing you."
Julian gasped, his hands flying to his mouth. "No... she wouldn't..."
"Who is it, Thomas?" Eleanor demanded, setting her martini glass down with a sharp clink.
Before Thomas could answer, a high, frantic voice echoed from the grand foyer.
"Mrs. Whitmore! Please, you have to hear me! Julian, help me!"
Chloe Thorne pushed past the butler, stumbling into the drawing room.
She looked entirely unhinged. Her designer trench coat was disheveled, her mascara smeared across her pale cheeks, her hair tangled from the evening wind. The cold arrogance she had displayed in the elevator that morning had morphed into a desperate, feral bid for survival.
"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor rose from the settee, her voice freezing the room. "Julian, why is your secretary trespassing in my home?"
Chloe fell to her knees before Eleanor, weeping loudly, clutching at the hem of Eleanor’s silk trousers. "Mrs. Whitmore, please! You have to save Julian! Clara has gone mad! She found out about... about how close Julian and I were, and she’s trying to destroy him! She fabricated financial records, she had me assaulted by security, and now she’s threatening to send Julian to federal prison out of jealousy!"
Julian stood frozen, his eyes wide with horror. "Chloe... get out. Get out of here right now!"
"Julian, stop protecting her!" Chloe screamed, looking up at Eleanor with crocodile tears streaming down her face. "Julian loves me, Mrs. Whitmore! We’ve been together for two years! Clara abandoned him for her career, and now that she has the CEO position, she wants to wipe him out completely! You have to stop her! You're the matriarch!"
Eleanor looked down at the weeping woman, then looked up at her son. Her face didn't betray a shred of panic—only an icy, terrifying calm.
"Julian," Eleanor said softly. "Is this woman your mistress?"
Julian opened his mouth, but only a dry squeak came out. He couldn't speak. He couldn't look his mother in the eye.
"Answer me," Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping into a register of pure steel.
"Mother... it’s... it’s complicated," Julian choked out. "Clara was never home, and Chloe was always there—"
*Slap.*
The sound of Eleanor’s palm striking Julian’s cheek echoed through the cavernous drawing room like a whip crack. Julian stumbled backward, clutching his face in shock.
"You pathetic, cowardly fool," Eleanor hissed, her hands trembling with rage. "You bring your cheap, conniving whore into my home on my birthday to beg for your absolution?"
"Mrs. Whitmore!" Chloe cried out, horrified. "I’m not a whore! Julian bought me gifts! He promised me—"
"Silence!" Eleanor roared, turning on Chloe with eyes blazing like embers. "You dare speak to me? You dare crawl into my house like a gutter rat, boasting about ruining my son's marriage and stealing from my family?"
I stepped forward, reaching into my handbag, and pulled out the small, velvet jewelry box that security had confiscated from Chloe that morning.
I walked over to Eleanor and handed it to her.
Eleanor opened the box. Inside lay the Blancpain Ladybird sapphire watch, resting on white satin, its blue sapphire catching the chandelier light.
"Happy birthday, Eleanor," I said gently. "Julian used family trust funds to purchase this for you three weeks ago. Chloe was wearing it on her wrist this morning when she dumped iced tea on me in the executive elevator."
Eleanor stared at the watch. A muscle feathered in her jaw. Slowly, she closed the velvet box with a quiet, decisive snap.
"Thomas," Eleanor called out, not taking her eyes off Chloe.
"Yes, madam?" the butler answered from the doorway.
"Call the police. Report an intruder for trespassing, extortion, and harassment. If this creature is not off my property in five minutes, release the hounds."
Chloe scrambled backward on her hands and knees, terror finally breaking through her delusions. "Julian! Do something! You promised me Miami! You promised me the money!"
Julian didn't move. He couldn't move. He stood with his hand against his burning cheek, watching his mistress crawl out of the room like a wounded dog.
Eleanor turned back to Julian, her eyes cold as winter frost.

"As for you, Julian," his mother whispered, "you are no longer my son. Clara... do whatever you must with the company. Burn him to the ground if you have to. Just ensure this family’s name survives his stupidity."
