Chapter 4 - The Vultures Circle

By midnight, the third-floor master suite was empty. Security guards confirmed that Claire and Grant had loaded their remaining belongings into Grant’s mud-spattered Range Rover and sped down the winding driveway into the dark California night, leaving behind a trail of broken promises, unpaid vendor invoices, and corporate wreckage.
Down in the subterranean vault beneath my cabin office, the blue glow of multiple computer monitors illuminated the dark room.
I sat with my feet propped up on the metal desk, sipping a cup of black coffee, while Marcus Vance patched in via encrypted video call from his office in San Francisco.
"Well, Daniel," Marcus said, grinning through the screen, swirling a glass of scotch. "The shockwaves are already hitting the financial district. Bennett Hospitality’s stock is in freefall. Their institutional backers are pulling out of every subsidiary project they're involved in. Grant Mercer’s development firm is facing an emergency liquidity crisis because they fronted three million dollars in uncollateralized prepayments for the Cedar Veil spa expansion."
"What about Evelyn?" I asked, taking a sip of coffee.
Marcus chuckled darkly. "Her name was listed as a co-guarantor on several of Bennett Hospitality’s high-risk development loans. Her suburban mansion in Palo Alto is already flagged for emergency foreclosure proceedings by the lenders. She’ll be moving into a one-bedroom rental apartment by the end of the week."
"Karma has a way of balancing ledgers," I murmured.
"It does indeed," Marcus agreed, leaning forward. "Which brings us to the next phase. Now that you’ve reclaimed full operational control of Cedar Veil Estate, what’s the long-term play? Are you going to sell off the land to a commercial conglomerate? With the current real estate valuation, you could easily walk away with two hundred million dollars tax-free."
I looked over at the framed photograph of my grandfather, Silas, hanging quietly on the wall beside the server racks.
"No, Marcus," I said softly. "My grandfather didn't spend his life acquiring this land so it could be turned into a corporate strip mall or a billionaire's playground. Cedar Veil stays agricultural. We expand the organic vineyard, restore the historic horse trails, and open the estate up as a sanctuary for local artisans, independent winemakers, and families who appreciate the land for what it actually is."
Marcus smiled, raising his glass toward the camera. "Consider it done. I’ll draw up the restructuring papers for the Thorne Agricultural Foundation by morning."
"Good." I ended the call, stood up, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window that looked out over the dark, sprawling expanse of the estate.
Up here, away from the glittering chandeliers, the fake smiles, and the hollow ambitions of people like Claire and Grant, the night was silent, peaceful, and entirely real.

The foundations were solid. And nothing was ever going to shake them again.
