Chapter 9 - RECKONING AND REBUILDING

Three months later, the autumn chill gives way to the crisp, bright winds of early winter in Boston.

My life has fundamentally transformed. The viral TikTok video eventually faded from the daily news cycle, replaced by financial journal articles profiling Reed Capital’s meteoric rise and my new status as one of the youngest self-made fintech billionaires in the country.

My father and Fay are currently living in a modest two-bedroom rental apartment on the outskirts of Hartford. My father took a low-level consulting job with one of our subsidiary firms—not out of charity, but because he actually possessed industry knowledge when he wasn't being managed by Fay’s social ambitions.

Lark, meanwhile, moved to Miami to live with an aunt, attempting to rebuild an influencer career on Instagram under a new handle. Her engagement to Dean Veale is a distant, embarrassing memory, especially since Dean is currently facing criminal charges for his involvement in his father’s offshore accounts.

And as for me?

I am standing on the private balcony of my Back Bay penthouse, watching the sun set over the Charles River. The city lights are beginning to twinkle against the evening sky, casting a golden glow over the glass towers of the financial district.

The balcony door slides open.

Harrison steps out, handing me a crystal glass of champagne. He is wearing a cashmere sweater, looking less like a ruthless corporate raider and more like a man who has finally found a place to rest.

"Penny for your thoughts, CEO," Harrison murmurs, leaning against the railing beside me.

I take a sip of the champagne, looking out over the skyline. "I was just thinking about that night. The engagement party. Fay cutting my hair in the bathroom."

Harrison turns his head, studying my face. "Do you regret how it played out?"

"Not for a second," I reply firmly. "If Fay hadn't tried to make me ugly, I might have kept hiding in the shadows. She gave me the push I didn't know I needed to stop apologizing for my own success."

Harrison smiles, reaching out to gently touch the edge of my sleek, asymmetrical pixie cut. His fingers brush against my cheek, warm and deliberate.

"She tried to make you small," Harrison says softly, his voice dropping an octave as his amber-grey eyes lock onto mine. "Instead, she accidentally introduced the world to an empress."

I feel a shiver run down my spine—not from the winter wind, but from the quiet, undeniable intensity of his gaze. Over the past three months, our professional partnership has evolved into something much deeper, built on mutual respect, shared ambition, and an unspoken understanding that neither of us needs anyone else to validate our worth.

"An empress needs an empire, Harrison," I whisper, stepping closer to him.

"And you have one," he replies, his hand sliding from my hair down to cup my jaw, his thumb tracing my lower lip. "Though I intend to make sure you have a very good partner to help you run it."
