Chapter 10 - NEW HORIZONS AND A HAPPY ENDING

The Grand Ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel is breathtaking.

One year to the day after the disastrous engagement party in Connecticut, I am standing in the center of the same room—only this time, I didn't come in through the back.

Tonight is the annual Reed Capital Winter Gala, a charity fundraiser celebrating female entrepreneurs in tech and finance. Hundreds of guests mingle beneath crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne and discussing venture capital investments, startup incubators, and the future of global markets.

I am wearing a custom-designed, emerald-green silk gown that drapes over my silhouette with absolute, effortless elegance. My hair is styled in a sophisticated, sleek asymmetrical cut that highlights the sharp lines of my cheekbones and the diamond earrings catching the light overhead.

My father is here, too.

He stands near the edge of the room, talking quietly with a couple of colleagues. He looks older, more humbled, but also noticeably lighter—free from the toxic exhaustion of trying to maintain a lifestyle built on lies and social posturing. When our eyes meet across the room, he offers a quiet, respectful nod. I nod back. There are no apologies left to make; we are simply rebuilding our relationship on healthier, honest ground.

Lark didn't come. She sent a text message last week—short, polite, and devoid of her usual venom—wishing me success. It’s a small step, but distance has a way of healing wounds that proximity only keeps infected.

"You clean up nicely, Miss Reed," a familiar, rich voice murmurs near my ear.

I turn around.

Harrison Black stands behind me, dressed in a flawless midnight-blue tuxedo, his amber-grey eyes shining with undisguised adoration.

"I always clean up nicely, Mr. Black," I retort with a playful smile. "You just never noticed until I stopped hiding."

Harrison chuckles, stepping closer and slipping his arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his side. "Oh, I noticed from the very first second you walked out onto that terrace with hacked hair and the eyes of an apex predator."

"Is that right?"

"Absolutely." Harrison reaches into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

The surrounding conversation in the ballroom seems to fade away as the music softens into a gentle instrumental melody. Guests turn their heads, murmuring with delight as they realize what is happening.

Harrison drops to one knee right there on the polished marble floor of the grand ballroom, beneath the sparkling chandeliers, surrounded by the empire we built together.

He opens the box. Inside rests a ring featuring a stunning, deep-amber diamond set between two brilliant white stones—a symbol of our strength, our strategy, and our future.

"Tinsley Reed," Harrison says, his voice carrying clearly across the silent, breathless room. "You outsmarted the corporate raiders, destroyed a dynasty of frauds, and built an empire from the ground up while wearing a hacked haircut. Will you do me the honor of letting me be your equal partner for the rest of our lives?"

Tears of pure joy prick at the corners of my eyes—not tears of weakness, but tears of absolute triumph.

I look around the room at the brilliant women we’ve funded, the successful future we’ve secured, and finally, down into the amber-grey eyes of the man who loves me not despite my strength, but because of it.

"Yes, Harrison," I smile, extending my hand. "Let’s conquer the world."

As he slides the ring onto my finger and stands up to pull me into a passionate, triumphant kiss, the ballroom erupts into thunderous applause.

Fay’s kitchen scissors are a distant memory now.

I didn't need a fairy godmother, an engagement ring from a corrupt dynasty, or anyone’s permission to shine. I wrote my own story. And the best part?

The empire is entirely mine.
