Chapter 7 - The Leverage of Blood

Patricia’s face twisted from rage into something far more pathetic: desperate, crawling fear.
She dropped to her knees right there on the wet wooden deck, oblivious to the rain that was soaking through her silk trousers. "Clara, please. You don't understand what they're threatening to do. The trust was linked to the equity on my primary residence in Carmel. If the county executes the environmental lien, the bank forecloses on my house. I will be homeless at sixty-two!"
"You should have thought of that before you forged the secondary conveyance deed," Marcus spoke up from the doorway, stepping into the porch light holding a leather-bound folder.
Patricia froze, her eyes darting to Marcus in terror. "What... what did you say?"
"You didn't just reassign the deed, Patricia," Marcus said with chilling precision. "You utilized Clara’s digital signature on the secondary county disclosure form to bypass the environmental review. You believed that because you were her mother and a co-signatory on the initial application two years ago, nobody would verify the digital certificate."
Julian turned on Patricia, her jaw dropping in sheer horror. "Mom?! You forged her name?!"
"I had to!" Patricia cried, waving her hands wildly. "The review would have taken three months! The sponsors needed the wedding done this weekend! We were going to make half a million dollars in affiliate links alone! I was going to pay Clara back her seventy thousand dollars once the campaign money cleared!"
"You were never going to pay me back," I said, my voice cutting through the damp chill like glass. "You told me twenty-four hours ago that my seventy thousand was simply the rent I owed the family for existing. You told me Julian was the future, and I was nothing."
Julian took a trembling step toward me, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt on her cheeks. "Clara... please. I didn't know she forged your signature. I swear to God, I didn't know. If the brands file those fraud lawsuits, I’m ruined. I will never work in this industry again. Everything I’ve built for five years will vanish overnight."
"What you built was an illusion, Julian," I said. "You built a career on pretending other people's labor was your own. You took my venue, you took my design, you took my suppliers, and you put your brand tag on top of it. Now the bill has arrived. And you can't pay it with Instagram likes."
"Clara, I'm begging you!" Patricia sobbed, reaching out to touch my hem, but Sterling placed his polished leather shoe directly in front of her hand, blocking her.
"What do you want, Clara?" Julian whispered brokenly. "Tell us what you want. Please. We'll do anything."
I looked down at the two women who had spent my entire life taking every drop of my energy, my money, and my dignity, treating me like an unpaid servant in my own family.
"You want me to sign the trust dissolution to save you from criminal fraud charges and personal bankruptcy?" I asked slowly.
Patricia looked up, her eyes wide with desperate hope. "Yes! Yes, darling, please! Sign it!"

"Then here are my terms," I said, stepping forward until my shadow fell squarely over both of them.
