Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Glass Castle

Ten miles south, beneath the towering bluffs of Monterey, Julian’s fairy-tale wedding was unraveling before hundreds of thousands of live viewers.
The livestream had started thirty minutes late, but instead of the sweeping aerial drone shot of Julian descending a marble-tiled staircase draped in white calla lilies, the camera feed caught pure chaos. Two Monterey County Sheriff deputies stood directly in front of the main entry gate, yellow caution tape fluttering behind them in the stiff ocean gale.
"You can't do this!" Patricia’s voice shrieked, piercing through the microphone of a beauty influencer who had been broadcasting live from the VIP lounge. "Do you know who we are? We have permits! We spent two hundred thousand dollars on this production!"
"Ma'am, you have an unpermitted excavation on a protected coastal shelf," Deputy Miller replied, his voice flat and unmoved as he clipped his citation pad back onto his utility belt. "Your temporary structure is currently compromising the cliffside retention wall. We are under strict orders from the Department of Fish and Wildlife to clear the perimeter. Everyone off the grass. Now."
Across the lawn, panic erupted.
Julian, clad in a custom twenty-thousand-dollar French lace gown that had been sponsored by a luxury bridal house, stood near the champagne fountain with her veil whipping violently in the wind. Her face was pale beneath her heavy contouring. Around her, high-profile guests in designer gowns were hiking their hems out of the mud, scrambling toward the valet stand only to find that the road was blocked by two tow trucks hauling away the catering generators.
"Julian! Julian, look at the screen!" her maid of honor screamed over the wind, thrusting an iPad into Julian’s trembling hands.
The live chat was scrolling faster than the eye could follow, and none of it was congratulations.
*Wait, is she getting arrested?!*
*Did she really build a stage on an endangered bluff?*
*Look at the brand logos falling off the arbor lmao!*
*@LuxeGlowCosmetics did you guys endorse illegal construction on protected land?!*
Within minutes, the brand sponsors took swift, ruthless action. The corporate legal teams, monitoring the disastrous feed from New York and Los Angeles, began pulling their endorsements in real time.
A notification popped onto Julian’s personal phone: *Notification from Prestige Diamond Co.: Partnership agreement terminated under Morality and Legal Compliance Clause 4.1. Demand for immediate return of $150,000 promotional advance issued.*
Another followed: *Vogue Living has canceled the exclusive photo feature.*
Patricia stumbled across the muddy lawn, her designer heels sinking inches into the damp earth, ruining the delicate silk fabric of her mother-of-the-bride gown. Her mascara was running, her composure completely shattered.
"Where is she?!" Patricia screamed, clutching her phone like a weapon. "Where is Clara?! Why isn't she answering?!"
"Mom, what did Clara do?!" Julian sobbed, clutching the ruins of her dress as the flashing red and blue lights of three more county patrol cars illuminated the descending fog. "The brands are suing me! They're saying the contract was signed under fraudulent venue representation! You said Clara handled all the permits!"
"I took her name off the deed!" Patricia cried out, her voice cracking with terror. "I signed the property over to you! She wasn't supposed to have any say anymore!"
A tall, sharp-looking man in a trench coat stepped through the remaining wreckage of the flower arches. It was the lead investigator from the California Coastal Commission. In his hand, he held a clipboard and an official summons.
"Patricia Henry?" the investigator asked.
"Yes! And I demand you speak to my lawyer—"
"I don't need your lawyer, ma'am," the officer interrupted coldly. "I need the primary operating officer of the Henry Family Trust. As the executing signatory on this morning's unauthorized earthworks, you are personally liable for the sixty-five-thousand-dollar daily environmental violation fine, accumulating hourly until the site is cleared. Furthermore, the district attorney’s office has filed an emergency injunction freezing all accounts associated with this address."

Patricia’s legs gave out, and she collapsed directly onto the sodden, ruined lawn of the estate she had stolen.
