Chapter 4 - The Uniform Beneath the Silk

"Lies!" Margaret screamed, lunging at me again with her claws outstretched.
This time, she didn't get within three feet.
Ethan moved like lightning. He didn't strike her; he simply caught her wrist in an iron grip, twisting it just enough to neutralize her momentum without breaking bone. Margaret gasped, pinned in place, unable to move an inch forward or backward.
"Robert," Ethan said calmly to Colonel Harrison. "Read the charges."
Colonel Harrison stepped forward, unrolling a crisp sheet of federal parchment. His voice rang out like a sentencing judge in an open court:
"Margaret Carter. Chloe Carter. By order of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division, in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice, you are hereby detained as persons of interest in Operation Broken Shield. The charges include Conspiracy to Commit Espionage, Wire Fraud, Obstruction of Justice, and Accessory to Manslaughter involving the death of General Daniel Carter."
"Manslaughter?!" Margaret shrieked, writhing in Ethan's grasp. "I am his wife! I gave that man thirty-two years of my life! You cannot arrest me! Natalie, tell this brute to release me right now! I am your mother!"
"You stopped being my mother the day you tried to sell my father's memory," I replied, my voice steady, devoid of the hesitation that had plagued my youth.
I turned to Ethan. "Release her."
Ethan released his grip. Margaret stumbled back, rubbing her wrist, her chest rising and falling violently. She looked around the ballroom, searching for an ally, for someone among her elite circle to step forward and defend her.
No one moved.
Senator Thomas, who had been chatting with Margaret just an hour earlier, turned his back and took a sudden interest in the curtains. Mrs. Kensington, her closest friend at the country club, stepped backward into the crowd until she was completely hidden. The society world Margaret had traded her soul to impress had evaporated in thirty seconds.
"You think you’ve won?" Margaret spat, seeing that she was entirely alone. A wicked, desperate smile spread across her red lips. "You think you’re so clever, Natalie? You think putting on this show makes you a hero? You don't have the codes."
I narrowed my eyes. "What codes?"
Margaret sneered, taking a step toward the projector screen. "You think Daniel put everything in that escrow account? You think your precious father was a saint? Daniel knew what Julian Sterling was doing! He knew for months before he died! And Daniel made a deal of his own!"
A murmur of shock rippled through the room.
"Margaret, shut your mouth," General Vance warned, his voice deep and dangerous. "You are bordering on treason."
"No, Marcus! Let's tell the whole room!" Margaret laughed wildly, her hair coming undone from its elaborate updo. "Daniel Carter wasn't murdered because he was an innocent hero! He was murdered because he wanted out! He had five million dollars stashed in private accounts in Zurich, and the only way to release those funds was through the family security vault at Horizon Trust! Daniel gave *me* the master key!"
She reached down into the bodice of her gown and pulled out a heavy, antique bronze key attached to an encrypted military data fob.
"You have the escrow account, Natalie," Margaret hissed, dangling the key in front of my face like bait. "The government locked the compensation fund. But the real wealth—the money Daniel stole from the black budget programs—is locked in that vault. And nobody opens it without this key and my biometric scan!"
Ethan stepped forward, but I held up a hand, stopping him.
I looked at the key in Margaret’s hand. Then, I reached into my small evening clutch resting on the cocktail table beside me.
I pulled out a small, velvet-lined jeweler’s box.
I opened it.
Sitting inside was an identical bronze key. But unlike Margaret’s, mine was slotted directly into a titanium military authentication chip stamped with the official seal of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Margaret’s smile froze.
"Dad didn't give you the key, Margaret," I said softly, the silence in the room hanging on every word. "He gave you a duplicate to keep you occupied. He knew you were reading his personal journals. He knew Chloe was stealing files. He knew that if he didn't give you something to hunt for, you would come after me while he was overseas."
I snapped the box shut.
"The real vault at Horizon Trust isn't in Zurich," I said. "It's in the basement of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. And it doesn't contain stolen money. It contains Julian Sterling’s signed confession, the encrypted communications between Sterling and foreign buyers, and the original wire authorizations bearing your signature, Margaret."
Margaret’s face didn't just pale—it collapsed. Her eyes widened into saucers of pure terror. "My... my signature?"
"Did you really think Chloe was smart enough to set up an offshore shell company by herself?" I asked, looking down at my sister, who was still curled on the floor, weeping. "Chloe may have pulled the flash drive from Dad’s desk. But you were the one who authorized the wire transfers through your family foundation. You used the Carter Fallen Heroes Charity to launder Julian Sterling’s payoffs."
The room was so quiet you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents high above.
"Colonel Harrison," Ethan ordered, his voice ringing through the hall like a gavel. "Take them both into federal custody. Escort all guests out through the screening corridor. Secure the premises."
"No!" Margaret screamed as two MPs stepped forward, their heavy hands closing firmly around her arms. "Get off me! Natalie! You're my daughter! You can't do this to your own family! Ethan, please! Look at what she’s doing to us!"
As the handcuffs clicked shut around Margaret’s wrists, she looked at me with pure hatred. "Your father would curse the day you were born!"
I looked her dead in the eyes, my posture unwavering, the blood on my lip dried and cold.

"My father gave his life for this country," I said. "You gave his life for a necklace. Get them out of my sight."
