Chapter 3 - The Truth Behind Chloe’s Ruin

A collective shriek of disbelief rippled through the guests.
"That's a lie!" Chloe screamed, breaking her silence with a desperate, ragged sob. She lunged forward, trying to grab the folder she had dropped on the floor, but an MP stepped across her path, his combat boot pinning the edge of the leather folder to the marble.
"Do not touch the evidence, ma'am," the MP barked, his voice flat and uncompromising.
"Mom! Tell them!" Chloe wailed, tears destroying her pristine makeup, dark mascara running down her cheeks. "They're framing me! Natalie has always hated me! She’s jealous because Dad loved me more! She’s making this up so she can keep all the money!"
Margaret seemed to seize on that fragile lifeline. She drew herself up, clutching at her pearls, her voice rising in shrill defense. "You hear her! This is an outrage! Daniel adored Chloe! He would never leave evidence that put his own daughter in danger! You two are abusing your military power to terrorize two grieving women! Marcus, I demand you arrest them both!"
General Vance didn't even blink. He looked at Margaret with an expression of profound, weary disgust. "Margaret, Daniel didn't die in an accident. And he didn't die because of bad luck. We buried our finest general because someone inside his domestic circle had access to his secure satellite uplink schedules. For three years, we couldn't prove how those codes left his Virginia study."
Vance gestured toward Colonel Harrison. "Show her."
Colonel Harrison tapped his tablet. Instantly, the massive projector screens on either side of the ballroom—originally set up to display a montage of Ethan and my childhood photos—flickered.
The images vanished. In their place appeared bank statements, high-resolution surveillance photographs, and encrypted wire-transfer receipts.
The first photograph showed Chloe sitting at an outdoor café in the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Across the table from her sat a man in his late forties with slicked-back gray hair, an impeccably tailored Italian suit, and a thin, predatory smile.
"Julian Sterling," I stated, my voice carrying clearly through the frozen ballroom. "CEO of Aegis Vanguard Logistics. A defense contractor that was denied three major supply chain bids by my father because Dad caught them skimming millions in fuel contracts."
Chloe slumped against the wall, her breath coming in shallow gasps.
"Three months before Dad died," I continued, pacing slowly toward Chloe, "Julian Sterling opened an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under the corporate entity 'Starlight Holdings.' The sole beneficiary of that account was you, Chloe."
"It was an investment!" Chloe shrieked, clutching her head. "He was investing in my clothing line! He believed in my vision! That’s all it was!"
"Really?" Ethan interrupted, his voice cutting like a razor. "Julian Sterling invested two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into a boutique that had no retail space, no inventory, and no business license? And in return for that 'investment,' what did you give him, Chloe?"
Ethan signaled to Harrison. The screen changed.
It showed an image of General Carter's home office in Alexandria. A timestamp in the lower corner read *March 14, 23:42*. The image was grainy night-vision, taken from an internal security sensor Daniel had installed without anyone's knowledge.
The video played. A woman slipped into the office. She was wearing silk pajamas. She walked straight to Daniel’s mahogany desk, opened the top right drawer, pulled out a classified Department of Defense keycard, inserted it into Daniel's personal terminal, and plugged in a red USB drive.
The camera caught her face perfectly as she glanced nervously toward the door.
It was Chloe.
The guests in the ballroom gasped again. Several prominent women covered their mouths in horror. Men who had done business with Margaret Carter slowly backed away, distancing themselves from the family.
"You took the deployment schedules," I whispered, the pain in my chest finally cutting through the professional discipline. "Dad trusted you. He left his study unlocked because he thought his home was the one place on earth where he didn't have to watch his back. And you sold his travel routes to Julian Sterling for boutique money."
"No... no, I didn't know!" Chloe collapsed onto her knees, sobbing uncontrollably onto the marble floor. "Julian told me it was just logistics data! He said it was just supply manifests! He said nobody would get hurt, that he just needed to know where the inspection teams were going so his company wouldn't get fined! He said he'd give me half a million dollars! I was in debt, Natalie! I owed bookies! I had people threatening to break my legs!"
"And what about Dad's life?" Ethan roared, taking a thunderous step toward her. The raw fury in his voice made even the MPs stiffen. "His life was worth your credit card bills?"
Margaret stood paralyzed. She looked at the screen, then down at Chloe sobbing on the floor. For a fraction of a second, I thought I saw remorse in my mother’s eyes. I thought the reality of what her favorite child had done would finally pierce the armor of her vanity.
I was wrong.
Margaret slowly turned her head toward me. Her eyes were not filled with horror at Chloe’s treason. They were filled with cold, calculating rage at me.
"You knew," Margaret whispered, her teeth bared. "You’ve known this whole time. That’s why you held onto Daniel’s compensation. You set a trap for your own sister."
May you like
"It wasn't a trap, Margaret," I said softly, feeling a tear finally escape my eye, hot against the cut on my cheek. "It was an investigation. And Dad was the one who started it."
