Chapter 19 - The Gavel Falls on Shadows

Hayes was on Vance in a heartbeat, his knee driving into the extortionist’s shoulder blades, pinning him to the stone until the sickening click of steel handcuffs echoed across the terrace. Barnaby stood over the fallen predator, chest heaving, his muzzle stained with soot, growling low and steady until Hayes gave the command: "Heel, boy. Good dog."

Vance groaned in agony, his face pressed against the cold Wisconsin flagstones, his arm bruised and bleeding. "You can't prove anything... the corporate entity holds the claim... you have nothing..."

"I have your father's forged drafts, your disbarment records from Illinois, and Captain Thomas Miller sitting in the federal attorney’s office right now," I said, walking over to stand above him, my voice colder than the lake wind. "You’re done, Arthur. The Vance name is wiped off this shoreline forever."

Within seven minutes, the bluffs swarmed with law enforcement. Four Ozaukee County sheriff cruisers and three unmarked black SUVs carrying federal marshals tore up the drive, their sirens wailing in deafening harmony. Fire trucks from Port Washington roared down to the harbor basin, foaming down the maintenance shed before the flames could reach the main academy buildings.

Marigold and Veta emerged from the cellar staircase, safe and unharmed. Marigold ran straight into my arms, burying her face into my neck, while Barnaby bounded over to lick her hands with boundless, triumphant joy. Veta stood beside Hayes, her head held high, no longer the trembling pawn of our mother’s manipulation, but a woman who had stood her ground to protect our family.

Two federal agents hauled Arthur Vance to his feet, reading him his rights in the gray afternoon drizzle. As they shoved him into the back of the transport cruiser, Julian Mercer stepped out of an SUV, holding a certified red-ribbon folder from the United States District Court.

"Judge Thornton just signed the summary judgment, Lenora," Julian announced, his voice carrying clearly over the dying hiss of the fire hoses. "The Vance 1974 indenture has been declared a fraudulent instrument under federal maritime code. The title to the bluffs, the harbor bed, the academy, and all associated waterfront assets is now permanently, irrevocably cleared in the name of the Lenora Sterling Foundation."

The longshoremen who had rushed up from the commercial docks erupted into thunderous applause, slamming their hard hats against their thighs as the federal cruisers drove Vance away in chains.

Hayes wrapped his strong, soot-stained arm around my shoulders, pulling me tight against his side. We stood together on the terrace, watching the smoke clear from the basin, feeling the enduring heartbeat of our land beneath our feet.

The wolves had attacked with fire, forge, and blood—and they had broken against the rock of our truth.
