Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Broker

From the shadows near the restaurant bar, two men in tailored suits stepped forward. Behind them, I walked into the dining room, followed by Harrison Vance holding a thick leather legal dossier.
The blood instantly drained from Betsy’s face. She looked between Lucas and me, her fork clattering loudly against her fine china plate. Heads at nearby tables turned.
"Pamela?" Betsy stammered, her voice pitching up an octave. "Lucas... what is this? What is she doing here?"
"She's here to witness the end of your little side hustle, Mom," Lucas said calmly, picking up the microphone pin from beneath his collar and setting it deliberately next to his wine glass. "Everything you just said was recorded. Everything you've done for the past eighteen months is documented."
"You... you set me up?!" Betsy shrieked, half-rising from her seat. "Lucas! I am your mother! How dare you do this to me!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Hale," Harrison said, his voice ringing with absolute legal authority as he placed a federal subpoena squarely on the center of her dinner plate. "I am Harrison Vance, corporate counsel for Pamela Hale’s enterprise. And contrary to your delusions, my distant cousin Julian Vance has not protected you. He threw you to the wolves three hours ago."
Betsy blinked, stunned, her chest heaving. "What? That’s a lie! Julian promised—"
"Julian Vance was detained at Zurich Airport by Swiss federal authorities at four o'clock this afternoon," Harrison cut in smoothly. "We filed an emergency international injunction based on the keylogger data extracted from Pamela’s office. To save his own skin, Julian handed over every single email, wire transfer receipt, and voice recording between the two of you."
Betsy’s eyes bugged out. Her skin turned a sickly gray. "No... no, no, no. Julian wouldn't..."
"He did," I said, stepping right up to the booth. I leaned down, locking eyes with the woman who had kicked my mother’s luggage, who had tried to steal my life’s work, who had treated our home like a conquered province. "He told the federal prosecutors that you were the mastermind. He claims you approached him first, offering to steal my proprietary medical diagnostic platform in exchange for an eighty-twenty cut of the European rights."
"That's a lie! He reached out to me!" Betsy screamed, hysteria cracking her voice as several restaurant patrons gasped and reached for their smartphones. "He found me on LinkedIn! He said he could make me rich!"
"Save it for your deposition, Betsy," I replied coldly. "Because you didn't just commit wire fraud and intellectual property theft. You took physical prototypes from my lab."
Betsy went utterly rigid. Her throat bobbed. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
"Where is the cold-chain telemetry unit, Betsy?" I demanded, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "The one with the experimental beryllium core that was removed from my laboratory safe last Tuesday. If that unit is damaged or leaking, you aren't just facing corporate espionage charges. You are facing federal hazardous transport violations."
Betsy began to tremble violently. The arrogant matriarch who had ruled over family holidays with an iron fist, who had sneered at my humble origins, looked like a trapped animal in the glare of headlights.

"I didn't damage it," Betsy whimpered, tears of genuine panic finally spilling over her mascara. "I gave it to the courier. He told me to put it in a locker at the New Bedford industrial docks. He’s putting it on a cargo freighter tonight!"
