Chapter 10 - The Sister-in-Law's Confession

Within forty minutes, a silver sedan pulled up to the police perimeter outside Pier 14. Chloe Hale—Lucas’s younger sister, who had supposedly been away on an academic fellowship in London for the past six months—stepped out into the misty drizzle.
She wasn't dressed in designer clothes like her mother. She wore an oversized wool sweater, jeans, and sneakers, clutching a beat-up leather messenger bag against her chest. Her face was pale, red-eyed, and swollen from crying.
"Chloe?" Lucas rushed forward, ducking under the police tape. "What are you doing here? How do you know the courier?"
Chloe looked past Lucas, her eyes landing on me. Then, without a word of defense, she dropped to her knees on the wet asphalt and burst into hysterical sobs.
"I’m sorry... Pamela, I’m so, so sorry," Chloe wept, her hands covering her face. "I tried to stop her! I swear to God I tried to stop her!"
Lucas knelt beside his sister, bewildered and horrified. "Chloe, talk to us! What did you do?"
"I didn't steal anything, Lucas!" Chloe gasped, looking up with tear-streaked cheeks. "I was the one who tipped off Harrison Vance this morning! I sent the anonymous tip to the patent office two weeks ago from London!"
I stopped dead in my tracks. "You were the whistleblower?"
Chloe reached into her messenger bag, pulling out an encrypted laptop and a stack of bank statements. "Mom didn't just steal from you, Pamela. Two years ago, right after Dad died, Mom forged my signature on a parent-plus loan. She drained my entire graduate school trust fund. She took out three credit cards under my Social Security number and maxed them out to buy designer bags and lease luxury sports cars."
Lucas’s jaw dropped. "She stole your college fund?"
"She left me with sixty thousand dollars in defaulted debt!" Chloe cried out, her voice raw with years of buried agony. "When I confronted her, she laughed at me. She told me that daughters were meant to serve their mothers. She told me that if I ever spoke a word to Lucas, she would tell everyone I was a drug addict and have me cut out of the family."
Chloe wiped her nose, trembling in the bitter wind. "Six months ago, she contacted me in London. She told me she had found a way to 'restore the family fortune.' She bragged that she had cloned Pamela’s office drives and had Julian Vance on a hook for millions. She told me she’d pay off my debts only if I acted as the emergency relay contact for the courier in Boston."
"Why didn't you come to me, Chloe?" Lucas choked out, tears burning in his own eyes. "I’m your brother! I would have paid off your debts in a heartbeat!"
"Because she convinced me you were under her thumb, Lucas!" Chloe sobbed. "Every time I called home, you were defending her! You were making excuses for her cruelty! When she kicked Pamela's mother's suitcase at the beach house and snapped that handle, you still tried to calm Mom down instead of throwing her into the ocean! I thought you would take her side no matter what she did!"
The words hit Lucas like a physical blow. He staggered back slightly, the brutal truth of his past enmeshment hitting him with full force.
"I was blind," Lucas whispered, his voice trembling with profound remorse. "I was so desperate to keep a broken family together that I let a monster poison everyone I loved."

"She’s not a mother, Lucas," Chloe said quietly, handing me the encrypted laptop. "She’s a predator. And inside this drive is every recording, email, and bank account she’s hidden since the day Dad died."
