Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The courtroom monitor flared to life.

The audio filled the chamber, crystal clear, echoing off the high stone walls.

*“Where does she keep the deed, Melissa? She didn't put it in the safe deposit box, the lawyer said it was filed with the property deeds in the master suite.”*

Evelyn froze. Her mouth fell open in a silent, horrified 'O.'

*“Check the vanity, Mom! Hurry up, Lily is watching us from the stairs.”*

*“Let her watch. If Arthur thinks he can cut me out of three hundred thousand dollars of equity from beyond the grave, he’s mistaken...”*

Judge Harrison’s pen snapped in half.

The sharp *crack* of plastic echoed like a gunshot in the quiet room.

On screen, the video showed Lily walking into the frame, clutching her yellow marker. It showed Evelyn lunging forward. It captured the sickening sound of Evelyn’s palm striking Lily’s face, followed by Evelyn’s venomous snarl: *“Shut your mouth, you little brat! This is my house! Everything your mother has belongs to me!”*

Then came the audio of Evelyn instructing Melissa to call 911 and manufacture a psychiatric emergency to build a paper trail for today’s hearing.

The video ended.

The screen went black.

The silence that followed was suffocating. The air in the courtroom felt charged with high-voltage electricity.

Melissa had buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as she began to sob in silent, pathetic panic.

Evelyn stood rigid, her knuckles white as she gripped the edges of the mahogany table. Her face had turned an unnatural, grayish-white, the veins in her neck bulging against her pearls.

Judge Harrison slowly set down the pieces of her broken pen. When she looked up, her eyes were cold enough to freeze water.

“Petitioner,” Judge Harrison whispered. The softness of her voice was infinitely more terrifying than a shout. “Do you recognize the voices on that recording?”

Evelyn’s lips moved, but no sound came out. She swallowed hard, clutching her lace handkerchief. “Your Honor... that... that recording was obtained illegally! It is a violation of my privacy! Natalie planted that device to entrap me!”

“You were inside the respondent’s home without permission, committing what appears to be grand larceny, child abuse, and burglary,” Judge Harrison said, her voice trembling with barely suppressed fury. “And then you had the unmitigated gall to walk into my court, place your hand on the Holy Bible, and commit aggravated felony perjury in an attempt to weaponize this bench against an innocent child.”

“Your Honor, please!” Melissa cried, jumping to her feet, tears streaming down her makeup. “It was Mom’s idea! She told me we had to do it to save the store! She told me the trust was ours!”

“Shut up, Melissa!” Evelyn shrieked, spinning around and slapping her older daughter across the mouth right there in front of the judge’s bench.

*BAM! BAM! BAM!*

Judge Harrison’s gavel came down with such savage force that the sound reverberated down the hallway outside.

“BAILIFF!” the judge roared. “Take them both into custody!”
