Chapter 6 - Under the Gavel

Judge Patricia Harrison had iron-gray hair cut into a sharp bob and eyes that had seen thirty years of human wreckage. She sat beneath the great state seal, reviewing the paperwork in front of her without an ounce of warmth.
“This is an ex parte emergency hearing brought by Evelyn Harper and Melissa Harper seeking temporary protective custody of Lily Harper, age five,” Judge Harrison announced, her voice echoing in the nearly empty courtroom. “I see the respondent, Natalie Harper, is present with counsel. Mrs. Evelyn Harper, you are the petitioner. Swear in the petitioner.”
Evelyn stood at the petitioner’s table, placed her hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth with an expression of divine grace that could have won an Academy Award.
“Your Honor,” Evelyn began, her voice quivering with carefully rehearsed maternal grief. “It breaks my heart to stand here today. A mother never wants to expose the failings of her own child. But my granddaughter Lily is in grave, immediate peril.”
Judge Harrison didn't look up from her notes. “State the factual basis for the emergency, ma’am.”
“Yesterday afternoon, while Natalie was out of town on an unannounced excursion, Lily suffered a violent psychiatric episode,” Evelyn said, wiping away a nonexistent tear with a lace handkerchief. “She became destructive, armed herself with dangerous implements, and barricaded herself inside a room. When I attempted to intervene to protect her, she attacked me. The situation was so dire, Your Honor, that I was forced to dial 911.”
Melissa leaned into the microphone. “Two squad cars responded, Your Honor. Officers Daniels and Miller. Lily was found hysterical on the floor. When Natalie returned, she exhibited extreme paranoia, refused medical evaluation for the child, and physically ejected us from the home. We believe Natalie is suffering from a delayed grief psychosis related to her father’s death and is entirely incapable of managing Lily’s severe behavioral disturbances.”
Melissa dramatically slid a single sheet of paper toward the bailiff. “This is the certified incident dispatch record from the police department confirming the emergency response.”
Judge Harrison glanced at the dispatch sheet. She frowned, her pen tapping against the mahogany desk. “Counsel for the respondent. Mrs. Vance. What is your client’s position?”
Sarah Vance stood up smoothly, buttoning her suit jacket.
“Your Honor, our position is very simple,” Sarah said. “The petitioner, Evelyn Harper, is a perjurer. Her daughter Melissa is a co-conspirator. And this entire filing is a fraudulent scheme to hijack a multi-million-dollar testamentary trust to stave off personal bankruptcy.”
Evelyn gasped loudly, clutching her chest. “Your Honor! I object to this slander!”
“Sit down, Mrs. Harper,” Judge Harrison said, her voice dropping into a dangerous warning tone. “You will not speak out of turn in my courtroom. Mrs. Vance, you make an extraordinary allegation. You had better have extraordinary evidence.”
“We do, Your Honor,” Sarah said. “First, we present Respondent’s Exhibit A: the certified supplemental narrative filed at 11:00 AM this morning by Officer Daniels of the police department.”
Sarah handed a blue-backed document to the bailiff, who delivered it to the bench.
“In this narrative,” Sarah continued, “Officer Daniels explicitly clarifies that the original 911 call was based on fabricated claims made by Evelyn Harper. No edged weapons were found. No property was destroyed. In fact, Officer Daniels states under penalty of perjury that Evelyn Harper actively misled emergency dispatchers.”
Judge Harrison’s eyebrows shot up. She adjusted her glasses, reading the report with intense scrutiny.
Melissa shifted uncomfortably in her chair, her face draining of color.
“Furthermore,” Sarah said, her voice rising with crisp authority, “we present Respondent’s Exhibit B: the pediatric forensic examination conducted this morning at St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Robert Chen documented four deep, contusive grip marks on the five-year-old child’s left arm. The report concludes that these injuries are entirely consistent with an adult forcefully grabbing and twisting the child’s arm.”
Judge Harrison stopped reading. Her gaze slowly shifted from the paper to Evelyn Harper.
Evelyn’s composure was beginning to fracture. “She... she fell! The child was thrashing on the carpet! I had to restrain her for her own safety!”
“Really, Evelyn?” Sarah Vance turned, pointing directly at the high-definition monitor mounted on the courtroom wall. “Because that’s not what you said yesterday at 2:42 PM in Natalie’s bedroom.”
Sarah tapped the screen of her tablet.

“Bailiff, please dim the lights,” Sarah said. “Respondent’s Exhibit C: internal security footage from the residence.”
