Chapter 7 - The Holding Cell

The stench of chlorine, damp concrete, and human sweat permeated the basement holding cell of the municipal justice center in Cancun.

Daniel Hart sat on a cracked wooden bench, his head buried in his trembling hands. The crisp linen shirt he had worn to his beachfront wedding was now torn at the shoulder, stained with sweat and grime. His bare feet were blistered from walking across the gravel yard during processing.

Across the narrow iron bars, separated into the women's holding pen, sat Mara.

Her lavish silk robe had been stripped away and replaced with an oversized, faded blue inmate smock. Her makeup was smeared across her cheeks like greasepaint, and her once-glossy extensions were matted with salt spray.

"Say something, Daniel!" Mara wept hysterically through the rusted mesh. "Stop sitting there like a dead man! Call someone! There has to be someone in New York who can post our bond!"

Daniel slowly lifted his head. The look in his eyes was no longer that of the charming, confident heir who had smiled for society photographers. It was the feral, hollow gaze of an animal realizing it had fallen into a meat grinder.

"Who, Mara?" Daniel rasped, his voice shredded from screaming. "Who is going to help us? My mother? She doesn't have a penny of her own! The board? The board is terrified of Evelyn! Every single person in our social circle owes their wealth, their connections, or their business deals to Evelyn’s empire!"

"She's bluffed us before!" Mara yelled, clutching the iron bars until her knuckles were chalk-white. "She won't let you go to prison! She loved you! If you just sign a confession admitting that I forced you into it, she’ll drop the charges against you! Daniel, listen to me—tell the prosecutors I seduced you! Tell them I threatened to ruin you! Just get us out of here!"

Daniel let out a bitter, manic laugh that echoed off the damp stone walls.

"You think Evelyn cares who seduced whom?" Daniel sneered, standing up and shuffling toward the bars with pure malice radiating from his frame. "Did you hear what she said on the phone? She quoted my text message word for word. *'Please don't make this ugly.'* She wasn't heartbroken, Mara. She was amused!"

"She's a bitch!" Mara shrieked, spitting through the bars. "A cold, unfeeling sociopath! She never gave you anything! She treated you like a pet! I gave you passion! I gave you worship!"

"You gave me a prison cell!" Daniel roared, slamming both hands against the iron. "You told me we were bulletproof! You told me your uncle had manipulated the corporate accounts so cleanly that she would have to pay us twenty million just to make the lawsuit go away! You lied to me!"

"I lied to you?!" Mara scoffed, tears of rage spilling down her red cheeks. "You were the one who begged me to book the jet! You were the one who couldn't wait to show off your new trophy wife on Instagram! You wanted the world to think you were a conqueror, but you're nothing! You’re just a spoiled, pathetic gigolo who couldn't survive twenty-four hours without his wife’s credit card!"

Daniel lunged forward, his face inches from the bars, his veins bulging against his neck. "If I go to federal prison for ten years, Mara, I will testify against you on every single count. I will tell the FBI that every single offshore wire was your idea. I will bury you so deep in federal custody that you won't see daylight until you're fifty years old!"

"You coward!" Mara screamed, throwing herself against the iron partition. "You pathetic, miserable coward!"

Before Daniel could scream back, the heavy iron door of the cell block creaked open.

A Mexican guard led two American federal marshals down the corridor. They carried sets of heavy leg irons and transport chains that clinked ominously against the concrete floor.

"Daniel Hart. Mara Cole," the lead marshal announced with absolute indifference. "Your emergency extradition hearing has been waived by the United States Department of Justice. The government of Mexico has approved your deportation as illegal fugitives. The transport flight to Stewart International Airport departs in forty minutes."

Mara’s scream echoed through the damp corridor like a wounded animal. "No! Please! I don't want to go back! The reporters—the cameras—please!"

Daniel didn't scream. As the heavy steel irons snapped shut around his ankles and wrists, pinning his arms to his waist, he simply stared blankly at the floor.

He knew exactly what awaited him in New York.

Not just a trial. Not just a prison cell.

Evelyn was waiting. And Evelyn never left a job half-done.
