Chapter 4 - The Cries from Quintana Roo

Two thousand miles south, the sun beat down mercilessly upon the pristine white sands of the Riviera Maya. But inside the presidential suite of the Grand Velas Riviera Maya, paradise had decayed into absolute hysteria.
Mara Cole stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror, clutching a three-thousand-dollar silk robe around her trembling frame. Her diamond engagement ring—a five-carat cushion-cut stone that Daniel had purchased using Evelyn’s credit line—felt like a band of scorching iron around her finger.
"What do you mean, declined?!" Mara shrieked, whirling around toward Daniel, who was pacing the marble living room with his phone pressed violently to his ear. "Daniel, fix this! The resort manager is standing outside our private villa with two armed federal police officers! They're saying the down payment for the presidential wing bounced!"
"Shut up, Mara! Just shut the hell up!" Daniel barked, his face blotchy and sweating through his linen shirt. His hair was wild, his eyes sunken from a sleepless night of panic. "Arthur Sterling isn't answering! The family office isn't answering! Even my mother’s phone went straight to voicemail!"
"Call Evelyn!" Mara screamed, stepping closer to him, her polished manicured nails digging into his arm. "She’s your wife! Beg her! Tell her you made a mistake! Tell her whatever you need to tell her to get the cards unblocked!"
"I already called her!" Daniel yelled, shoving Mara's hand away with undisguised disgust. "She hung up on me, you idiot! She told me she's letting the law handle it! Do you have any idea what that means? She’s not crying in bed! She’s tearing our lives apart piece by piece!"
A heavy, authoritative knock rattled the double oak doors of the villa.
"Señor Hart," a deep voice called out from the courtyard, firm and devoid of the customary hospitality tone. "This is Manager Morales. You must vacate the premises immediately. The local magistrate has issued a detainer warrant regarding an international fraud complaint filed by Chase Manhattan Private Bank. If you do not open the door within sixty seconds, the municipal police will enter."
Mara’s knees gave out. She slumped onto the ivory sofa, sobbing violently. "This wasn't how it was supposed to happen! You told me she was weak! You told me she relied on you for everything! You promised me that after the wedding was official, she would agree to a quiet settlement to avoid the public scandal!"
"I thought she would!" Daniel roared, grabbing a crystal whiskey glass from the bar and hurling it across the room. It shattered violently against the marble wall, scattering shards across the expensive rug. "She was always forgiving! When I bought the yacht, she sighed and paid it off! When I crashed the Ferrari, she called her lawyers to protect me! She has never said no to me in seven years!"
"Because she loved you, you arrogant fool!" Mara wept, her face contorted with pure terror. "And now she hates you! She’s going to destroy us!"
"Open the safe," Daniel demanded frantically, dropping to his knees before the hidden wall unit. "Where are the watches? Where is the cash we brought from the safe deposit box?"
Mara froze. A guilty, sickly shadow washed over her features.
Daniel turned slowly, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Mara. Where is the cash?"
"I... I gave it to the charter pilot yesterday morning," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the ocean waves outside. "To secure the private island rental for the reception next week..."
"You did WHAT?!" Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of her silk robe. "You spent four hundred thousand dollars in cash on a deposit for an island we haven't even seen?!"
"You said we were rich now!" she cried out defensively, trying to fight him off. "You told me we had twenty million coming from the trust fund!"
Before Daniel could scream another insult, the master doors swung open with a resounding bang.
Four uniformed officers of the Mexican Federal Police stepped into the villa, their hands resting firmly on the holsters of their service weapons. Behind them stood Manager Morales, flanked by an austere-looking woman wearing a tailored gray suit and carrying a diplomatic folder.
"Daniel Hart?" the woman asked in crisp, unaccented English.
Daniel slowly let go of Mara, stepping back with his hands raised, his voice cracking. "Yes... yes, I am Daniel Hart. Look, this is a massive misunderstanding. My family owns Hart Global. We have hundreds of millions in domestic assets—"
"I am Special Agent Cruz, liaison to the United States Department of State and Interpol," the woman said, completely unimpressed. "At six o'clock this morning, a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York unsealed an indictment against you and Mara Cole for conspiracy, interstate wire fraud, and grand larceny exceeding twelve million dollars."
Mara gasped, clutching her chest. "Indictment? No, no, this is a civil matter! This is a divorce dispute!"
"When you use stolen corporate credentials to charter an aircraft across international borders and wire funds from a commercial treasury into private offshore accounts, it ceases to be a civil dispute," Agent Cruz replied coldly. "Your American passports have been officially revoked by the Department of State. You are currently illegal aliens on Mexican sovereign soil."
"No... please..." Daniel whimpered, tears finally spilling over his hollow cheeks. "Please, just let me call Evelyn one more time. Just one minute. She will fix this. She always fixes this..."
"Take them," Agent Cruz ordered the officers in Spanish.
Within seconds, the cold steel of handcuffs snapped around Daniel’s wrists. Another officer wrenched Mara’s arms behind her back, locking the cuffs tight despite her shrill, agonizing screams.
As they were dragged out of the five-star suite, through the pristine garden corridors where wealthy vacationers stopped and stared in utter disgust, Daniel looked down at his bare feet and wept.

The paradise he had built on betrayal had lasted less than twenty-four hours.
