Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Ethan stayed on the floor for three agonizing minutes, sobbing into his hands.

It wasn’t the cry of a man remorseful for the pain he had caused. It was the pathetic, self-pitying weep of a con artist who had been out-conned.

“Madison…” he choked out, looking up at me, tears streaming down his stubbled cheeks. “Help me. Please. You have to help me. If the board presses charges for the six million, I’m going to prison. My life is over. My career is dead. Please, Madison, for the sake of what we had… you have to protect me.”

I looked at him, feeling an overwhelming sense of emotional detachment.

Five years of devotion, late nights waiting up with warm dinners, listening to his corporate anxieties, forgiving his emotional neglect—all of it boiled down to this moment.

“What we had died the moment you texted me *‘Then divorce me’*,” I said, my tone as steady as granite. “You made your bed, Ethan. Now you have to lie in it.”

“I’ll do whatever you want!” he begged, grabbing the hem of my trousers. “I’ll sign whatever you put in front of me! I’ll surrender all my shares! I’ll testify against Chloe! Just don't let them send me to federal prison!”

I stepped backward, pulling my clothing out of his desperate grasp.

“You *will* surrender your shares,” I said. “And you *will* testify against Chloe. Not because I’m going to save you from consequences, but because it’s the only way you won’t spend the next fifteen years of your life behind bars.”

I signaled toward the door.

Marcus Vance walked in, holding a fresh, legally binding settlement agreement, followed by two uniformed Chicago police detectives and an investigator from the State Attorney’s Office.

Ethan froze, his eyes bulging as he looked at the badges hanging from the detectives’ belts.

“Ethan Cole?” Detective Miller, a stern woman with iron-gray hair, stepped forward. “You are currently named as a person of interest in an ongoing criminal fraud investigation regarding Apex Design’s escrow misappropriation. Your counsel, Mr. Vance here, has indicated that you wish to make a voluntary proffer statement regarding Chloe Vane and Enrique Vane.”

Ethan looked at Marcus, then at me.

“Madison… you called the police?” he whispered in horror.

“I told you, Ethan,” I replied, walking toward the window. “I run Cole Holdings now. I have a fiduciary duty to the firm, to our investors, and to the city of Chicago. If you want any leniency from the prosecutor, you’d better tell them every single detail of what Chloe Vane had you do.”

Ethan bowed his head, defeated. He let the detectives escort him to the small conference table in the adjoining room.

Meanwhile, Chloe Vane was blissfully unaware that the ground had collapsed beneath her feet.

At that exact moment, Chloe was at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

She was sitting in the first-class lounge of Terminal 3, sipping a mimosa, a designer carry-on bag at her feet containing her jewelry, cash, and passports. She had a one-way ticket to Miami booked for 11:30 AM, where she intended to meet her brother and disappear before the corporate scandal exploded into criminal charges.

She opened her phone and checked her banking app.

The Cayman account showed a pending transfer.

She smiled to herself, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. *Poor Ethan,* she thought. *He was so easy. A few compliments, a tight dress, a little ego-stroking, and he handed over six million dollars like a trained dog.*

Suddenly, two plainclothes federal agents and two airport police officers entered the lounge.

The passengers looked up in surprise.

The agents walked directly toward Chloe’s booth.

Chloe’s smile froze. Her hand trembled, sending a spill of orange mimosa across the polished walnut table.

“Chloe Vane?” Special Agent Henderson flashed his gold badge.

Chloe attempted to summon her signature helpless, innocent gaze. “Yes? Is there a problem, officer? I’m about to board my flight to visit my family—”

“Miss Vane, you are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant for grand larceny, interstate wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering,” Agent Henderson stated flatly.

The room gasped.

“What?!” Chloe shrieked, jumping to her feet. “This is ridiculous! I haven't done anything! My father is Arthur Vane, you can’t touch me!”

“Your father was arrested in Miami forty-five minutes ago, Miss Vane,” the agent replied, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “And your co-conspirator, Ethan Cole, is currently at the State Attorney’s Office signing a sworn confession that names you and your brother as the primary architects of the embezzlement scheme.”

“Ethan?!” Chloe’s face turned purple with fury. “That spineless bastard! He stole the money! He begged me to help him hide it from his wife! He forged the documents!”

“You’ll have plenty of time to explain that to a federal judge,” Agent Henderson said, clicking the handcuffs around her wrists. “Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

As Chloe was led out of the first-class lounge in handcuffs, past dozens of shocked business travelers filming the arrest on their smartphones, her polished, glamorous facade completely disintegrated.

She screamed, cursed Ethan’s name, and spat at the floor.
